Rex Ryan Has Lap Band Removed to Support Brother Rob

Rex and Rob Ryan seem to be closer than ever these days, coaching together with the Buffalo Bills and supporting each other off the field.

After Rob Ryan had a near-fatal encounter with a lap band—a device placed on the stomach that restricts food consumption and causes weight loss—his twin brother Rex decided to remove his lap band, too. According to Mark Cannizzaro of the New York Post, the Bills head coach had an arthroscopic procedure to take out the device.

"I told him we'll figure this out together [without the lap band]," Rex Ryan said. "Plus, I won more games without it than did with it in."

Rex Ryan initially went through the surgery in 2014 and lost over 100 pounds.

The 53-year-old is in his second season in Buffalo after spending the previous six years as head coach of the New York Jets. He has a 54-59 record in the regular season and is 4-2 in the playoffs.

But since the start of 2014, he is 12-21. In his first two years with the Jets, he went to the AFC Championship Game.

Rob Ryan is in his 13th straight season as a defensive coordinator in the NFL, having spent time with the Oakland Raiders, Cleveland Browns, Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints. This year marks the first time the brothers have been on the same staff since they were defensive assistants under their father Buddy for the Arizona Cardinals in 1994 and 1995.
