Lamela's development under Mauricio Pochettino has made him a valuable member of the starting XI, so his absence is a blow to Tottenham as they pursue a top-four place in the Premier League and a personal setback as well.
The 25-year-old is as skilled as any in the Spurs squad and one of their top creators.
Tottenham should be covered in the latter sense thanks to the likes of Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and perhaps Moussa Sissoko, but aside from the full-backs, there are few who can offer the pace and natural width that Lamela provides.
In his stead, it will likely fall to the versatile Heung-Min Son to fill in. The South Korean has been a reliable player for Spurs since his arrival at White Hart Lane, but he perhaps lacks the explosiveness and technical quality of his team-mate—Lamela's presence will be missed.
