Sami Zayn vs. Chris Jericho Announced for WWE Clash of Champions 2016 PPV

Joseph ZuckerSep 12, 2016

WWE announced Monday night during Raw that Sami Zayn and Chris Jericho will wrestle at Clash of Champions on Sept. 25.

Zayn and Jericho's feud is a natural outgrowth of Zayn's continued beef with Kevin Owens. He and the WWE universal champion can't wrestle every week, so inserting Jericho is a way to continue drawing attention to the prolonged rivalry without overexposing it.

The match came to fruition following a heated exchange on Jericho's Highlight Reel, where Y2J hit Zayn with his cellphone and delivered a Codebreaker.

WWE shared a replay of the beatdown:

The Miami Herald's Scott Fishman joked the damage to Zayn could've been worse:

Particularly since joining up with Owens, Jericho has been one of the most entertaining Raw wrestlers over the past few weeks. His backstage interviews with Tom Phillips have become must-watch television, and he delivered another enjoyable back-and-forth Monday, courtesy of WWE:

Despite being 45 years old, Jericho remains a skilled in-ring technician, so he and Zayn should put together a good match at Clash of Champions.

If Backlash is any indication, WWE will give the wrestlers plenty of time. Excluding Randy Orton's forfeit, every match on the card went 10-plus minutes.

The Universal and Women's Championship matches will get most of the attention, but Jericho and Zayn could steal the show in Indianapolis.
