Broncos Bring in Tate for Workout
Sunday, Sept. 4
Citing a league source, Pro Football Talk's Josh Alper reported the Denver Broncos recently worked out Tate.
Targeting a returner in advance of Thursday's season opener against the Carolina Panthers makes plenty of sense for the Broncos after they let safety and last year's primary kick returner Omar Bolden walk in free agency.
A seven-year veteran, Tate has served as one of the league's more reliable kick returners during stints with the Bengals and New England Patriots.
Throughout his five-year stay in Cincinnati, he averaged a solid 24.3 yards per kick return. Last year, he tallied 22.9 yards per return with a long of 58.
Those numbers would represent a major improvement for the Broncos, who ranked 23rd among all NFL teams last season with a cumulative team average of 21.8 yards per kick return.
Tate hasn't tallied more than 20 receptions in a season since 2010, though, so if he latches on with a new club, he's likely to be deployed as nothing more than a return specialist.
