US Open Tennis 2016: TV Schedule, Start Times for Saturday Night Draw

Steve SilvermanSep 3, 2016

The superstars in the world of tennis are well-established, particularly on the men's side, as Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and the injured Roger Federer tend to dominate all the biggest tournaments.

However, there are no guarantees that Djokovic (arm, wrist) will survive his nagging injuries and make it through to the championship round of the U.S. Open, and the same holds for Murray even though he is in excellent form.

One of the players who may have a shot at making a long run is Australian Nick Kyrgios, who is the No. 14 seed. Kyrgios will face Illya Marchenko of the Ukraine under the lights in a 9 p.m. ET match at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Kyrgios is brimming with confidence after his 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Horacio Zeballos in the second round. Kyrgios won 23 of 24 first-serve points against his rival, and that serve may be his best overall weapon.

He did not face a break point in his win over Zeballos and was broken just once in his first-round victory over Aljaz Bedene.

If Kyrgios can beat Marchenko, he will reach the fourth round of the U.S. Open for the first time in his career.

Kyrgios believes his serving success gives him a chance to have a memorable run at the New York tournament.

"Guys with big games, guys that obviously can serve well, I think these courts favor them a lot," Kyrgios said, per ATPWorldTour.com. "I feel comfortable playing here. I think I'm returning really good on these courts. I've always felt comfortable coming here. … I'm happy. It could have gone on a lot longer. I'm happy I got off quickly."

On the women's side of the draw, sixth-seeded Venus Williams will clash with Germany's Laura Siegemund in a 7 p.m. match.

Venus has been in the shadow of younger sister Serena for years, but her relentless groundstrokes and power make her a formidable opponent even though she is 36 years old.

Williams made it all the way to the semifinal round at Wimbledon, and she is hoping for another long run in the national championship.

Siegemund, 28, made it to the third round of the Australian Open earlier this year, but she lost in the first round at the French Open and Wimbledon. A win over Williams would mark the furthest she has ever progressed in a Grand Slam tournament.

In addition to the Kyrgios-Marchenko match, third-seeded Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland will take on Great Britain's Daniel Evans in a 5:30 p.m. match at Louis Armstrong Stadium. Kei Nishikori of Japan, the sixth seed, will meet Nicolas Mahut of France in the Grandstand at the same time.

Wawrinka advanced to the third round with a pair of straight-set victories over Fernando Verdasco and Alessandro Giannessi. Nishikori needed four sets apiece to beat Benjamin Becker and Karen Khachanov.
