Jahri Evans Released by Seahawks: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

Tim DanielsSep 2, 2016

The Seattle Seahawks are reportedly set to release veteran offensive lineman Jahri Evans ahead of Saturday's deadline to trim rosters to 53 players.

Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported the Seahawks' decision to let Evans go after signing him to a one-year contract in August. Adam Caplan of ESPN confirmed the news Friday, adding the guard has plans to keep playing in the NFL.

Evans played the first decade of his NFL career with the New Orleans Saints before the team released him in February. He has earned six Pro Bowl selections and earned first-team All-Pro honors five times, but his play has dropped off over the past couple of seasons.

Adam Lewis of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer noted the 33-year-old guard expressed confidence in his ability to become a key piece of Seattle's line after signing in August.

"I feel great. I still feel like I'm a top guard in this league, if not the best," Evans said. "I'm just going out there to work hard and show it on the field, really."

His release means the Seahawks will likely move forward with Mark Glowinski and Germain Ifedi as the starting guards. Rees Odhiambo and Will Pericak, neither of whom has played in an NFL game, are in line to serve as the chief reserves.

The decision comes with some risk for Seattle based on its lack of experience at guard. But Evans hasn't looked like the same impact player as he heads toward his mid-30s, so the Seahawks front office decided to go with youth at the position.

Evans should be able to land another contract once the dust settles from cut day and teams begin looking for the final few pieces of their rosters. He'll likely be forced to accept a backup role, however, at least at the start of the new season.
