The Sunday Morning BCS Report: Week Five

Dan SmithOct 4, 2009

The nature of a round-robin tournament is to eventually lead to a true tournament.

It happens in so many sports, including NASCAR, where they have the Chase for the Cup. The sport of racing cars is more innovative than the powers that be of college football.

And it is only one level of college football; the lower divisions all have tournaments. Mount Union (Ohio) couldn't sell out the Alamo Bowl, so they get to play in a tournament where they were once the USC of Division III college football.

That is why it is okay to lose early in the BCS Round Robin Regular Season Tournament. USC is going to be okay and Cal is playing for a bowl game now after two horrible losses where they didn't even score a touchdown.

Cal didn't even score the equivalent of a touchdown and an extra point in the past two weeks.

The SEC has three teams in the top five. LSU went between the hedges and escaped with a 20-13 victory over Georgia. Alabama might be the best team in the country right now.

Florida has the most question marks with their weak schedule so far and Tim Tebow's status. Auburn is 5-0 now and should be in the next poll.

LSU is coached by a Michigan man in Les Miles. The Tigers run a plodding style of smash mouth football but they have these amazing athletes on offense and defense who are always making plays.

Charles Scott's run to win the game was amazing. With talent like Scott to hand to and Terrance Toliver to throw to, Jordan Jefferson can just manage the game.

How about that guy who had the Houston Cougars at No. 3? The No. 3 team in the country should not be giving up 58 points to UTEP.

Miami won the big game with Oklahoma on Saturday night, and it was a celebration in South Beach. After a brutal stretch to start the season, Miami is 3-1 and 2-1 in the ACC.

Last year, the talk was the Alabama was a year early and look how good they are now.

Miami played their way back into the round robin. Here is who I have left in position to win the National Title:

1. Florida

2. Texas

3. Alabama

Week 6 Preview

Florida goes to Baton Rouge to play LSU in an SEC and national showdown. Florida had a well-timed bye while LSU pulled one out over Georgia. After the first week of no top five teams losing, we are guaranteed one next week.

I picked Florida at the beginning of the year, but this might be an LSU win. The SEC also has Ole Miss/Alabama and Georgia/Tennessee, so maybe CBS can do a double-header.

Ohio State hosts Wisconsin while Iowa hosts Michigan in a couple of Big 10 battles. Look for the playmakers on Ohio State and Michigan to win out in a couple of close games.

Cincinnati and South Florida play in a game that might give us some insight to the Big East. These look like the two best teams in the Big East so we might find out that one of them is a great team. Or the Big East might be as bad as I think they are.

The big game in the Pac-10 is Oregon at UCLA. The Big 12 has a big one in two weeks, but next week it is Nebraska/Missouri.

One last thought...

The excessive celebration penalties that marred the end of the Georgia/LSU game were a real shame. The kids were only celebrating great plays made, especially that catch by  A.J. Green.

The rule needs to be changed so that kids can have fun. After all the hard work put in to get to the end and score a TD that puts your team ahead is something to celebrate.

Let's find a way to not make it a penalty.
