Matt Moore's Fantasy Outlook After Ryan Tannehill's Injury

Fantasy football players who were relying on Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill late this season could be in trouble after he suffered a knee injury against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 14.

Next up on the depth chart is Matt Moore, which isn’t encouraging news for fantasy players who may be in need of a quarterback option in Week 15, when Miami will take on the New York Jets.

Moore hasn’t played more than two games in a season since 2011, and his last touchdown pass came in 2012. What’s more, he had almost as many interceptions (28) as touchdown throws (33) entering the 2016 campaign and is not a rushing threat at all, with an average of 1.4 yards per rush in his career.

Those numbers don’t scream waiver-wire pickup, even if he potentially has an opportunity following Tannehill’s injury.

If there is any reason for optimism surrounding Moore as a fantasy option, it stems from his performance in 2011, when he threw for 2,497 yards and 16 touchdowns over 13 games in his first season with Miami:

Still, that was more of an anomaly than anything when compared to the rest of his career.

At least Moore would have some dangerous weapons to work with, including Jarvis Landry. The Dolphins’ top receiver, who's fresh off 1,157 receiving yards in 2015, creates opportunities for Kenny Stills and DeVante Parker when he draws double-teams. Stills isn’t far removed from the 931 receiving yards he put up for the New Orleans Saints in 2014, and Parker was a first-round pick in 2015.

However, the Dolphins wide receivers haven't been reliable for fantasy owners with the superior Tannehill in 2016. They would need to step up in a major way if Tannehill is unable to play Saturday.

Ultimately, Moore’s lack of proven production means he is not a high-upside value play for fantasy owners scouring the waiver wire. There should be better options available for those in the fantasy playoffs.
