Mike Tyson Accused of Stealing Ice Cream at US Open in a 'Misunderstanding'
Just when you thought you had heard it all, a story like this pops up.
According to Jamie Schram of the New York Post, Mike Tyson has been accused of stealing ice cream while at the U.S. Open in New York this week. The report states the 50-year-old retired boxer, who was with his daughter at the time, grabbed a Ben & Jerry’s "Half Baked" ice cream bar (which sells for $5.50) and proceeded to eat it without paying for it.
Here's what allegedly happened, per Schram:
""I was like, 'Are you serious? Am I imagining this?' (Tyson) was like, 'I feel like having an ice cream' and he just took it," said one stunned worker, adding, "What are you going to do, fight him? He’s Mike Tyson."
[...]
The female worker behind the stand yelled, "Excuse me, are you going to pay for that," but Tyson just ignored her and kept walking, according to the witnesses.
The worker then asked her superior what she should do, but her boss couldn’t care less, saying, "Oh, it’s Mike Tyson, let it go," said one witness.
"
On the plus side, the boss should be happy to have an employee who isn't going to let something like this slide. That's all a business can ask for from its workers.
While one side may view it as theft, there are always two sides to a story. Tyson's camp, headed by publicist Joann Mignano, insisted this was all just a misunderstanding, per Schram:
"There was a misunderstanding. Mike got the ice cream and was going to have the host pay for it as he was running around with his family. He was being pulled in a lot of directions as his daughter, Milan, is a rising tennis star and huge fan of the sport. … His host, [USTA national manager] David Slade, got the money from Mike and has made sure the bill has been taken care of.
"
Some celebrities just assume their status allows them to do whatever they want. But Tyson's camp gave the ice cream kiosk its money eventually.
