Manchester United Transfer News: Morgan Schneiderlin Eyed in Tottenham Rumours

Christopher SimpsonAug 31, 2016

Tottenham Hotspur reportedly want to sign Manchester United midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin in a deadline-day swoop.

According to an exclusive from the Daily Mail's Ian Ladyman, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino is familiar with the player after the pair worked together at Southampton and has "asked intermediaries to test the water with United."

However, Tottenham have received "little encouragement" from the Red Devils, as they want to keep the Frenchman as cover.

Paul Hirst of the Times provided further details:

Schneiderlin has struggled to get on the pitch this season, with his only appearances under Jose Mourinho being two brief cameos against Leicester City and Bournemouth in the Community Shield and Premier League, respectively.

The midfielder did not have the best debut season, but football writer Liam Canning believes he should be given an opportunity to regain his form:

Indeed, despite Marouane Fellaini's resurgence under The Special One, he has his limitations. And should he slip back into the routine of ineffectual performances he frequently put in prior to Mourinho's arrival, he will need replacing.

Per Ladyman, Bastian Schweinsteiger has already been informed he won't be playing with the first team under Mourinho, so Schneiderlin will be one of the prime candidates to come into the team in Fellaini's place.

Bleacher Report UK's Nick Akerman believes the Frenchman might only be worth moving on if United are prepared to bring in a top replacement before the window shuts:

Having recruited four marquee signings this summer, it seems unlikely the Red Devils will be conducting any business of their own on deadline day, as Mourinho is content with his current squad, per Ladyman.

Further, as noted by Bleacher Report UK's Karl Matchett, Spurs have little need for another holding midfielder following the capture of Victor Wanyama:

Though Schneiderlin proved he can be an excellent player under Pochettino during their time with the Saints, he'd be an unnecessary purchase for the Lilywhites.

His sale would also diminish United's depth, and considering Fellaini feels like a short-term solution in midfield, it's likely they'll need him as a back-up.

For the time being, it looks as though he'll stay put.
