Fantasy Football Week 2: Friday's Daily Fantasy Market Report
In the second Thursday Night Football game of the 2016 NFL and fantasy football season, the New York Jets came out victorious, winning 37-31 over the Buffalo Bills.
As we head into the weekend, this is our last shot to present the latest news and give you our DFS tips and tricks.
A lot of the news this time around is speculation from people close to the teams, but it makes sense and is worth nothing.
Spoiler alert: We'll cover Detroit Lions wide receiver Golden Tate here.
I wonder what gave it away?
Jaguars RB Chris Ivory DNP Thursday
1 of 9
According to Hays Carlyon of the Florida Times-Union, Jacksonville Jaguars running back Chris Ivory was a no-show at practice once again Thursday.
Nothing new here—Ivory becomes less likely to play in Week 2 with each passing day.
Going up against the San Diego Chargers in Week 2, fellow Jaguars running back T.J. Yeldon ($4,700 DraftKings; $6,500 FanDuel) is the play here.
Get him in your Week 2 lineups.
Cowboys QB Will Not Force Targets to WR Dez Bryant
2 of 9
According to Drew Davison of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott ($5,800 DK; $7,000 FD) will not force targets to wide receiver Dez Bryant ($8,400 DK; $7,200 FD).
Well, this is kind of obvious—of course Prescott isn't going to "force" targets to Bryant or anyone else.
However, the problem lies in the deep passing. While Prescott did have six pass attempts that sailed 20-plus yards in Week 1, he didn't complete any. He heavily relied upon tight end Jason Witten and wide receiver Cole Beasley on those short, intermediate routes.
In Week 2, the Cowboys will take on the Washington Redskins and cornerback Josh Norman.
You have to figure the Redskins will change their approach from last week, when Norman stayed on one side of the field. It will be more beneficial to get Norman to shadow Bryant for as much of the game as possible.
Bryant isn't exactly someone I'm pounding the desk for to get in my lineups Week 2, nor is Prescott.
Eagles TE Zach Ertz Not Ruled Out for MNF
3 of 9
Based on past reports, I'm not buying this at all.
According to Reuben Frank of CSN Philly, Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson did not rule out tight end Zach Ertz ($4,100 DK; $6,000 FD) for the team's Week 2 contest on Monday Night Football against the Chicago Bears.
I'll help you out with this one with just a few words—I highly doubt Ertz plays.
This is one of those "trap" scenarios. We have a shred of confidence a player will play, but there are virtually zero options beyond that player based on the game time, and then we get screwed.
Stay away from Ertz in DFS unless it's a Monday night lineup only and there is 100 percent confirmation he will play.
Ravens WR Breshad Perriman Practicing
4 of 9
This guy just loves popping up on the injury report, it seems.
According to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun, Baltimore Ravens speedster and wide receiver Breshad Perriman ($3,200 DK; $5,200 FD) returned to practice after dealing with a calf injury.
In Week 1, Perriman caught one of his two targets for 35 yards.
Coming out of UCF, the biggest threat in Perriman's game was his blazing speed.
However, as we saw in Week 1, fellow wide receiver Mike Wallace appears to be the main deep threat for the Ravens for now.
Going up against the Cleveland Browns in Week 2, Perriman is nothing more than a Hail Mary play. If he goes off to catch a deep bomb for a touchdown, he could help decide your fate in GPPs.
Other than that, again, I'm avoiding.
Bengals TE Tyler Kroft to See More Snaps?
5 of 9
Paul Dehner Jr. of the Cincinnati Enquirer expects Cincinnati Bengals tight end Tyler Kroft ($2,500 DK; $4,800 FD) to play more snaps than he did in Week 1 as he works back from a preseason knee injury.
This isn't exactly a bold prediction, but it makes sense—Kroft played just seven snaps in Week 1 against the New York Jets.
Because of this, neither Kroft nor fellow tight end C.J. Uzomah is worth a play in DFS because of the expected snap count balance.
Dolphins' Backup RB Job Up for Grabs
6 of 9
This report hurts me more than probably anyone.
According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the Miami Dolphins' backup running back job behind veteran Arian Foster ($6,000 DK; $7,400 FD) is wide open.
If you've followed me at all this season, you know I'm a huge believer in Dolphins running back Jay Ajayi ($3,700 DK; $4,700 FD).
However, after Ajayi was a healthy scratch in Week 1, that suggests Ajayi is slipping down the depth chart in favor of fellow Dolphins running back Isaiah Pead.
What makes this important is the fact that Foster is a tough back to rely upon in DFS to have significant rushing value because, let's face it, he's not the best runner anymore.
Outside of DFS sites that give points for receptions, I'm not a huge fan of Foster.
Stay away from all Dolphins running backs in DFS in Week 2 except for Foster on DFS sites that give points for receptions.
Eagles to Feed RB Ryan Mathews
7 of 9
According to Zach Berman of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson has said the team plans to feed the ball to running back Ryan Mathews ($5,800 DK; $6,300 FD).
With rookie quarterback Carson Wentz at the helm, this is an obvious and smart approach.
After seeing 22 totes in Week 1 in a blowout of the Cleveland Browns, Mathews was not as efficient as we'd like—averaging 3.5 yards per carry—but he did score a touchdown.
In DFS, volume is a key component to keep in mind when you insert a back into your lineup.
Behind Mathews on the depth chart, there is nothing of note until fellow running back Wendell Smallwood gets up to speed.
Lions WR Golden Tate to Be Used More at the LOS?
8 of 9
Tim Twentyman of the Detroit Lions' official site expects Lions wide receiver Golden Tate ($6,800 DK; $6,200 FD) to be used more at the goal line this season.
After Tate's Week 1 performance, this thought process makes sense.
In Week 1, Tate had seven targets. None of these targets were at 10 yards or more, and four came at or behind the line of scrimmage.
While this will definitely boost Tate's value on DFS sites that give points for receptions, you have to assume a relatively low yardage total each week.
For example, Tate makes for a good play this week on DraftKings against the Tennessee Titans.
Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas Concerned About Hip
9 of 9
According to Troy Renck of ABC's Denver7, Denver Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas ($6,400 DK; $7,000 FD) is worried about getting hit because of his hip.
Over this past week, Thomas has been dealing with a lingering hip issue.
It's telling when a player comes out and says this kind of thing—the issue is legitimized.
Going up against the Indianapolis Colts, the Broncos have a juicy matchup, but Thomas is a bit concerning in that this could lead to a potential reduction in snaps to keep Thomas healthy.
Even against the Colts, I'll likely be staying away from Thomas this week.
