Passing Wind(y)- Chicago Eliminated
You had to see this coming.
Chicago, the third largest city in the U.S. A beautiful, upbeat, and vibrant city with great diversity. A sports scene that is almost unmatched. A President that was Senator of Chicago(for some pull maybe?). And groundwork and plans for the Games, all but done. Oh, and a world view (or maybe just the U.S.'s) that had Chicago the clear favorite to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. Even Oprah Winfrey(more on this decision later) went to Denmark to lobby on Chicago's behalf!
And the winner is... Rio de Janeiro. Huh? Not only that, but Chicago didn't even make it pass the first round of voting! I, myself, was shocked, at first. Chicago was a perfect choice- to myself, and every other American.
Ah, but that's just it.
As an American, we expect to be awarded these types of things. It goes along with the mindset that we're the biggest and baddest country on Earth.
We don't even think that there's an alternative. Rio? Who? Really? "Why Rio?", one might ask. "Isn't Rio a hot-bed for crime?" Yes it is.
Chicago's crime-ridden, no doubt, but compared to Rio- there is no comparison. Of Rio's 6 million people, a fifth of them live in favelas, or slums, to the English speaker. That's 1.2 million people living in slums! That's more than Minneapolis/St.Paul, combined! As of 2007, there were 30 homicides a week! The police, who are shady themselves, killed 1,330 people, in 2007 alone! Rest assured, Rio isn't a safe place.
But the selection of Rio over Chicago wasn't about safety.
The rest of the world is tired of the U.S. No doubt, President Obama is trying to fix an image that was left to him in ruins by the worst U.S. President in history, George W. Bush. But it doesn't happen overnight. Bush went to great lengths, and succeeded, in having the rest of the world hate the U.S., and as charming and persuasive as President Obama might be, his cameo in Denmark didn't help any. The scars are too deep for the rest of the world to award the U.S. with anything.
And I'm sure the voters already had their minds made up before President Obama and First Lady Michelle showed up in Copenhagen to persuade the voters why Chicago was the clear-cut favorite. Even with Oprah. Oprah? Are you kidding me?
What in the world were people gonna do when Oprah arrived? Just lay down and award Chicago the Games? Does the rest of the world even know who she is? Just because she's the richest black woman in America doesn't mean the rest of the world gives a shit! Oprah?! She's a talk-show host! Was there an author there that needed a book on her show? What was the point? Because her shows in Chicago? Who cares!? How about Michael Jordan? He's from Chicago. He's the greatest basketball player to ever live. He's world renown. And he has two Gold Medals! Rio brought Pele- Chicago brought Oprah. Oprah!? Jesus Christ, really? That's why this country is going to hell in a hand-basket. We think that Oprah's important! Quick, name a famous talk-show host from another country. Thought so.
So here we sit. America in shock and Chicago crying. To arrogant to concede and too righteous to congratulate [Rio]. But hey, we still got Oprah!
Tune in or get tuned out- it's just Komencentz
