Novak Djokovic vs. Jerzy Janowicz: Score and Reaction from 2016 US Open

Rob GoldbergAug 29, 2016

Novak Djokovic was tested in the first round of the 2016 U.S. Open, but he survived with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 win over Jerzy Janowicz on Monday.

There were long rallies and close games early on, but the top seed succeeded thanks to his consistency throughout the match. He also did a great job of winning the points that mattered, saving 10 of the 12 break points he faced.

Janowicz couldn't keep up and finished with 13 double-faults to go with just five aces.

According to ESPN Tennis, the win moved Djokovic to 46-2 in his career in the first round of Grand Slam tournaments.

Djokovic likely scared his supporters early, when he needed extended time to deal with an arm issue in the first set, as Sports Illustrated described:

A wrist issue worried the Serbian player coming into the tournament, which made the new injury more noteworthy.

He was able to bounce back to win the first set, although it wasn't easy, as Russell Fuller of the BBC noted:

Howard Bryant of ESPN The Magazine noted a major reason for Djokovic's early success:

Janowicz was able to earn some breaks in the second set and claimed a 7-5 win, thanks mostly to his aggressive play at the net and 20 winners.

Ben Rothenberg of the New York Times discussed what he saw in the set:

Djokovic was able to bounce back in the third set, however, thanks in part to a 7-of-7 performance on his second serves.

As the match continued, Janowicz seemed to run out of steam and couldn't hang with Djokovic in the third hour of competition. The Polish player struggled to get his serves in play, and Djokovic took advantage, losing just three combined games in the last two sets.

Although it wasn't easy, the top seed will be happy he was able to pull out the win.

While Djokovic is the clear No. 1 in the world, injuries have limited the superstar as of late. He explained earlier in the week the wrist injury is still a problem, per Simon Cambers of Reuters:

"

The wrist hasn't been in ideal shape for the last three-and-a-half weeks but I'm doing everything in my power to make sure I'm as close to 100 percent as possible during the course of this tournament, at least for the beginning of it.

Sometimes time is what you need as an athlete and because the U.S. Open is around the corner I don't have too much time.

"

Injuries remained an issue Monday, but he did enough to survive the first round and advance.

In Round 2, Djokovic will face Jiri Vesely, who earned a five-set victory over Saketh Myneni.

Considering Marin Cilic, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and U.S. Open crowd favorite John Isner are on Djokovic's side of the bracket, though, making a deep run may not be as easy as usual.
