FedEx Cup Standings 2016: Updated Rankings Following Barclays Tournament

Steve SilvermanAug 29, 2016

Patrick Reed announced his presence on the PGA Tour a few years ago, when he called himself a top-five player in an infamous 2014 interview.

He backed up that claim on Sunday, when he won The Barclays at the famed Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale, New York.

The victory in the first of the FedEx Cup playoff tournaments allowed Reed to move to the top of the FedEx Cup rankings.

That position had previously been the domain of Australian Jason Day, but Reed outlasted the field to win The Barclays, propelling him to the top slot. Day is now the No. 2 player in the rankings.

Here's a look at the top 10 in the FedEx Cup standings as well as the full list. The top 100 players qualify for the second playoff event this week at TPC Boston.

The victory also earned Reed a slot on the United States Ryder Cup team that will take on Europe later in the year.

"It was a huge goal of ours to get back because, in our first Ryder Cup, we played so well and unfortunately the Cup didn't come back with us," Reed told Kyle Porter of CBS.com. "It's sweet revenge and hopefully our team gets fired up and go out and keep that Cup home."

The Ryder Cup will be played at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota, from Sept. 30 through Oct. 2.

Dustin Johnson, who finished in a tie for 18th in The Barclays, is the No. 3 player in the FedEx Cup rankings, while Adam Scott checks in at No. 4 and Jordan Spieth is in fifth place.

Scott had put himself in a position to win The Barclay's with his third-round 65, but after his moving-day success, he was unable to take advantage of his opportunity with a final-round 71. He finished tied for fourth in the tournament.

Spieth seemed close to top form throughout the four rounds at the New York course, but he shot a disappointing 72 in the third round and his final-round score of 69 included several missed scoring opportunities that left him in a tie for 10th place.

The Barclays served as the demarcation point for the automatic qualifiers to the United States Ryder Cup team. In addition to Reed, the other qualifiers include Spieth, Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Jimmy Walker, Brooks Koepka, Zach Johnson and Brandt Snedeker. The only player on the list without previous Ryder Cup experience is Koepka.

U.S. Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III still has four additional picks to make to fill out his roster. Three of those picks will be made Sept. 12, and the final pick will be made Sept. 25, according to RyderCup.com.

While The Barclays was a brilliant tournament for Reed, the closing holes turned out to be painful for Rickie Fowler, who was tied for the lead at the start of the final round.

Fowler had a double-bogey and three bogeys during the final nine holes, and his final round score of 74 left him in a tie for seventh place. He also went from fourth in the Ryder Cup standings to 11th, and he lost his chance at making the team as an automatic qualifier.

“Very disappointing,” Fowler told Greg Logan of Newsday. “It’s not the way I was playing the back nine all week. ... No. 15 and No. 16, if I go par-par there, it’s a different story.”
