Ridley Visits Indianapolis
Friday, Aug. 26
According to NFL.com's Mike Garafolo, Ridley is visiting with the Indianapolis Colts Friday.
The Detroit Lions released Ridley on Thursday, two days before the always-crucial third preseason game.
Just 27 years old, Ridley is trying to work his way back into the form that made him a crucial part of the New England Patriots offense in 2012 and 2013. He played in only six games during the 2014 season before tearing the ACL and MCL in his knee during an October contest against the Buffalo Bills.
Ridley did make it back on the field last season with the New York Jets, but he carried the ball just 36 times for 90 yards in nine games.
The Lions took a chance on Ridley, signing him to a one-year deal in April and hoping he could help stabilize a rushing attack that had the fewest yards in the NFL last season.
Instead, the Lions decided to go with Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick as their top two running backs.
The Colts would present a good opportunity for Ridley if the two sides come to an agreement. Frank Gore's career is winding down, and the team needs to commit to the running game to ease the burden on quarterback Andrew Luck after his injury-filled 2015 season.
Ridley isn't going to be a 1,000-yard running back at this stage of his career, but he's capable of serving as a backup who can make a spot start. His price tag at this point in the preseason will be low, so any team that has a need would be smart to call him.
