Liverpool Transfer News: Jurgen Klopp Speaks out Ahead of Deadline

Matt JonesAug 22, 2016

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admitted he “can’t wait” for the transfer window to close, as he addressed the press ahead of his side’s EFL Cup clash with Burton Albion on Tuesday.

The German faced the media on Monday, and following the loss to Burnley, he was quizzed on potential new signings before the deadline on August 31. However, as noted by This is Anfield, Klopp seems to have had enough of transfer talk at this juncture:

Some glaring holes were exposed in the Liverpool side in the 2-0 surrender at Turf Moor, though. Liverpool lacked the penetration from wide positions to cut through a cohesive Burnley team, while the midfield was sloppy when trying to stop counter-attacks.

Additionally, James Milner didn’t look particularly comfortable at left-back when deputising for the much-maligned Alberto Moreno. Klopp wouldn’t rule out the prospect of making more additions, although he refused to name a specific position in which he’s seeking to strengthen, per Neil Jones of the Liverpool Echo:

Against Burnley, the defensive deficiencies of the Reds were clear, although the attacking players didn’t do enough to get the team back into the contest in the end.

Indeed, Daniel Sturridge, Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino, usually so effective in the final third, toiled for much of the afternoon at Turf Moor. Klopp spoke specifically about the impact of forward Divock Origi, though, insisting he is still on the road to recovery following his injury layoff:

The nature of the defeat, especially given the Reds played so well to beat Arsenal in their first game of the season, has left a lot of Liverpool supporters miffed. But the former Borussia Dortmund boss isn’t getting too down about the loss:

The game against Burton is a chance for Liverpool to immediately get back to winning ways. The Championship side have enjoyed a rapid rise recently, and the Pirelli Stadium crowd will be fervent in the backing of their players and hoping to see an upset.

With that in mind, Klopp noted he’s been paying close attention to the progress of the second-tier outfit and said there won’t be too many changes to his team as a result:

Liverpool enjoyed a memorable run in this tournament last season, making it all the way to the final before losing to Manchester City in a penalty shootout.

It was a brilliant chance for Klopp to win his first piece of silverware as Reds boss, something he’s still chasing following defeat in the UEFA Europa League final earlier this year. The manager thinks it’s important Liverpool make their intentions clear with a strong performance in this one:

The clamour for new signings will always increase on the back of a poor performance, and for Klopp, who is overseeing his first summer in charge of the Reds, the persistent speculation about new acquisitions finally seems to be grating. Still, there’s no doubt that Liverpool need to make a couple of additions in vital areas.

This League Cup tie against Burton will be a chance for some players that have not featured so far this season to make their case for a more significant role following the defeat to Burnley. With a tough clash to come against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League this weekend, safe progression into Round 3 would be the perfect tonic for a frustrated Klopp.
