Ember Moon: Everything You Need to Know About WWE NXT's Newest Star

Erik BeastonAug 21, 2016

The NXT Universe was introduced to a dynamic, enigmatic and intriguing new talent on Saturday night as Ember Moon made her debut at TakeOver: Brooklyn II.

Her breathtaking twisting stunner to Billie Kay not only electrified fans in Barclays Center but introduced them to a performer who will introduce a little new blood into the NXT women's division.

So many recent call-ups to Raw and SmackDown have left NXT in need of new, fresh female talent to replenish its roster and provide challengers to women's champion Asuka. Moon can not only do that, she can be one of the faces of the brand.

Before that happens, though, a few questions must be answered.

Where did the captivating newcomer emerge from? Which WWE Hall of Famer had a hand in her development into the woman fans were introduced to on Saturday night? What does the future hold for her?

Hall of Fame Influence

On Saturday night, Moon spent the majority of her match with Billie Kay selling the powerful assault of her opponent. She garnered sympathy for herself before a flashy comeback and amazing finisher captivated fans and drove a hot finish.

That formula is one that Booker T utilized countless times over the course of his Hall of Fame career.

Trained by the six-time WCW world champion, Moon has been prepared for in-ring dominance by one of the greatest Superstars of his generation. Booker understands what it takes to be a star, the emotional connection one must make with the audience, and has imparted that on all of his Reality of Wrestling students.

It was under his guidance that she enjoyed her first taste of the wrestling industry before embarking on a journey through Texas, across the United States and into NXT.

All That Shimmers and Shines Is Uncensored

Under the name Athena, Moon found work in three women-exclusive promotions. Beginning in 2010, she appeared in SHIMMER Women Athletes, an Illinois-based company that has given rise to the likes of Becky Lynch and Bayley over the course of its existence.

It was there that she worked alongside the likes of Emma and TakeOver opponent Billie Kay while continuously evolving her ring game. She also had the opportunity to battle current TNA stars Allie and Jade and SHIMMER mainstays Nicole Matthews, Mercedes Martinez and Cheerleader Melissa.

The opportunity to do battle with those women allowed her to strengthen her in-ring game while simultaneously preparing her for bigger and better things.

SHIMMER was not the only company she thrived in early. Women Superstars Uncensored, another company devoted to giving women a platform to showcase their skills on, was home to some of her finest work.

Established female veterans including Jessicka Havok, Leva "Blue Pants" Bates and the great LuFisto made up the competition. Like her SHIMMER peers, those women pushed her to evolve as a performer. There was no comfort zone to fall into. She either adapted or was exposed as simply not being good enough to thrive against the best the business had to offer.

Looking for the trifecta, Moon appeared for Shine and earned the reputation as one of the brightest young female stars in the industry by battling respected competitors like Veda Scott and former Tough Enough star Ivellise Velez.

Rebuilding Rosters and Seizing Opportunities

Every match Moon has wrestled to this point, be it in an all-woman promotion or in front of 40 people in suburban Dallas, has prepared her for the bright lights and big stages of NXT.

On Saturday night, she made a pressure-filled debut against Billie Kay and shocked the wrestling world with her twisting stunner finisher, a maneuver commentator Corey Graves admitted was so spectacular that he had never seen anything like it before.

The influence of Booker T, the mentoring from the women she shared the ring with early in her career and the guidance of Triple H and her NXT coaches have come together to create a young competitor destined for big things in wrestling's hottest brand.

The timing of her arrival could not have come at a better time, either.

Carmella, Alexa Bliss and Nia Jax have joined Becky Lynch, Charlotte and Sasha Banks on Raw and SmackDown. Bayley is sure to move on up in the immediate future. After successfully retaining her title in Brooklyn, NXT women's champion Asuka does not have a wealth of challengers.

So shortly after her on-screen debut, Moon could find herself in the title mix.

For fans to get behind her, though, it will be imperative that NXT management delves deeper into the character and gives audiences a taste of her motivations and origins. Who is Ember Moon? Why does she do what she does?

Answer those questions, and the audience will be even more open to the idea of her knocking off a buzz saw of a competitor like Asuka.

Moon has the ability, the experience and the opportunity. If she can follow up on a jaw-dropping first impression at TakeOver, expect her to pick up the mantle left by the departing Bayley and carry it well into the future.
