Olympic 2016 Results: Medal Winners, Highlights on Saturday

Andy BaileyAug 20, 2016

The host country of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro got the gold medal it desperately wanted when Brazil beat Germany in a shootout in the men's soccer tournament.

It was the first Olympic gold for Brazil's men's soccer team.

On the track, American Matthew Centrowitz made history and won gold in the 1,500-meter run. South Africa's Caster Semenya got the win in the women's 800.

The night was capped off with both the women's and the men's 4x400-meter relays.

Brazilian Gold on the Pitch

It's impossible to put into words what it must've felt like for Brazil's fans and players to watch Neymar's gold-medal-winning penalty kick. Even non-soccer fans could feel something in themselves during Andres Cantor's call of the shot, though. NBC Olympics shared it:

The pure, raw emotion from Neymar as soon as the ball hit the back of the net almost filters through the screen.

The reaction of the crowd can be heard in another video from NBC Olympics:

Time's Sean Gregory called the kick "The Shot That Healed a Nation," writing:

"

Brazil really needed this win for its athletic psyche. The country envisioned finishing in the top 10 in the medal count: it won’t do so. But after tonight’s win, that shortcoming won’t be remembered either. Soccer won, over Germany. The World Cup embarrassment won’t be completely expunged. But the soccer healing began. And Neymar, the man who could well be Pele’s heir, fraught a mantle as that is, gave the nation the moment they wanted more than any other.

"

History in the 1,500

No American had won this race since Mel Sheppard in 1908. Over 100 years later, Centrowitz has ended that drought.

Former NFL tight end and Pro Football Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe congratulated the runner for doing so:

Perhaps most impressive about Centrowitz's run was the fact that he led the entire race and still had enough gas in reserve to out-sprint everyone down the home stretch. Chris Chavez of Sports Illustrated shared the impressive time of the last lap:

"My goal was just to get on the podium," Centrowitz told NBC's Lewis Johnson, per Seth Rubinroit. "I didn't ever dream of actually winning."

Six-Peat for USA

Carl, one of Bill Swerski's Superfans, once predicted that the Chicago Bulls would pull off an "eight-peat." It's hard to imagine that happening in any sport or even being brought up outside of a Saturday Night Live skit, but Team USA's 4x400-meter relay team is closing in.

The women pulled off the remarkable feat of winning their sixth straight Olympic gold in the event on Saturday. The win pulled Allyson Felix into a tie for second for the most golds ever for an American woman. She's alone in first for female track and field athletes, per NBC Olympics:

Redemption for Team USA Men

Botched exchanges and a seemingly invincible Jamaican team have haunted Team USA's 4x100-meter relay team for years. No such problems slowed down the Americans in the 4x400-meter race.

USA Track and Field shared the time:

The 4x400 was the last track and field final of the games in Rio, and the gold gave Team USA 31 track and field medals. That's the biggest haul for the Americans since 1956, per Olympic historian Bill Mallon:
