Olympic 2016 Results: Live Medal Count and Final Standings Updates

Tom SunderlandAug 21, 2016

The finish line is in sight at the Rio 2016 Olympics, and Sunday will see some of sport's true elite make their last attempts to bag a medal before the Summer Games finally reach their close.

The United States have bullied their way to the summit of the medal table yet again at these Olympics, but Brazil nevertheless has plenty of action to offer on Sunday before the athletes head back home.

American Claressa Shields is one of the boxing stars who will have her chance to extend the United States' lead at the top of the medal order, and she'll take part in one of four boxing finals on Sunday.

Elsewhere, long-distance favourite Eliud Kipchoge will hope to win his first Olympic gold in the men's marathon, having already clinched bronze and silver at Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008, respectively.

Here's how the overall medal table looks entering the closing day of Rio 2016:

The boxing ring will be one particular centre of attraction on Sunday, where there will be no fewer than four gold medals on offer across four different weight categories.

NBC Olympics confirmed Shields of the United States would have a chance to defend her Olympic gold in Brazil, and she'll go up against Nouchka Fontijn of the Netherlands:

Meanwhile, Great Britain's Joe Joyce will attempt to give his country a last-minute boost in the medal order as he prepares to lace up against Tony Victor James Yoka of France in the men's super-heavyweight final.

Joyce convincingly beat Kazakhstan's Ivan Dychko to book his place in the deciding bout and strut his stuff in the four-sided circle after ensuring he'll finish with at least a silver to his name:

Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn was also quick to congratulate the amateur following his semi-final win:

Elsewhere in the last leg of the boxing event, Uzbekistan can bank on two medal finishes as Shakhobidin Zoirov prepares for the test of Russian Mishan Aloian in the men's flyweight final.

His Uzbek compatriot, Fazliddin Gaibnazarov, will duel against Lorenzo Sotomayor Collazo of Azerbaijan for the men's light welterweight gold, yielding a major opportunity for Uzbekistan to capitalise.

Men's Marathon

A complete set of Olympic medals awaits Kipchoge as long as he can rally to take top spot in Sunday's marathon, where he shoulders a heavy burden as the favourite to win the gold.

The official Rio 2016 website recently provided a glimpse of the 10-kilometre loop track upon which Kipchoge and his opponents will run:

The Kenyan wouldn't be the first of his country to win distance gold on Sunday, and the 31-year-old himself congratulated compatriot Vivian Cheruiyot after her win in the 5,000 metres:

As things stand, the closest competition to Kipchoge could be the likes of Feyisa Lilesa of Ethiopia, not to mention fellow Kenyan countryman Stanley Biwott.

It's been a long 13 years since Kipchoge last won gold in any major event, clinching the 5,000-metre title at the 2003 World Championship, but the 26-mile marathon could be his time to shine.
