Thursday's Notable Results

Murray came to Ohio riding plenty of momentum after winning the gold medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, and he looked dominant against Kevin Anderson, earning a 6-3, 6-2 victory.

According to the ATP World Tour's official website, he notched seven aces, compared to Anderson's five, and won 67 percent of his first-serve points, compared to Anderson's 62 percent. Murray also converted four break points and gave Anderson only two break chances, one of which he converted.

The win marked a career milestone for the No. 1 seed, as the ATP World Tour noted:

While Murray appears to be on his way to a lengthy tournament run, Nadal saw his time in Mason come to a sooner-than-expected close against Borna Coric. Coric won with relative ease, 6-1, 6-3. Joe Kay of the Associated Press noted "Nadal showed the effects of his long layoff from a wrist injury."

A trainer had to check on Nadal between games. Nadal described some of the issues that plagued him during the match, per Kay: "Too tired. Elbow, shoulder. Two-and-a-half months without competing and especially without practicing, and to do what I did in the Olympics and come here—too much."

Coric ended up with eight aces and won an impressive 83 percent of his first-service points, per the ATP World Tour's official website. He was also a solid 5-of-8 on breaks.

Nadal wasn't the only marquee name to lose on Thursday, as the No. 2-seeded Wawrinka dropped his match in straight sets to Grigor Dimitrov, 6-4, 6-4. The key was the serve, as Dimitrov won 92 percent of his first-serve points, compared to 71 percent for Wawrinka, per the ATP World Tour's official website.

Unlike the men, the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds advanced in the women's draw. Kerber handled Barbora Strycova in straight sets, 7-6 (5), 6-4.

Halep had an easier time against Daria Gavrilova, winning 6-1, 6-2. She tallied three aces and won 70 percent of her first-service points, but her defense proved to be most effective. Gavrilova, who didn't finish with an ace, won a measly 36 percent of her first-serve points and allowed Halep to convert five of six break-point opportunities, per Pro Tennis Live.

Halep also had some crowd support, via the WTA:

The women's side wasn't upset-free, as No. 8 seed Dominika Cibulkova lost to Timea Babos, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
