Cristiano Ronaldo Injury: Madrid Star to Miss La Liga Opener with Knee Problem

Christopher SimpsonAug 18, 2016

Cristiano Ronaldo will reportedly miss Real Madrid's trip to Real Sociedad on Sunday because of the knee injury he suffered with Portugal in the UEFA Euro 2016 final.

According to Ed Malyon and Liam Corless of the Mirror, despite being able to do some physical training, the 31-year-old "is still nowhere near fit enough" to feature in Los Blancos' opening game of the 2016-17 Liga season.

However, Marca's Patricia Terroba (adapted by Chris Winterburn) reported that Ronaldo "now has his return date has been penned in for August 27" against Celta Vigo.

Malyon and Corless added that Karim Benzema is also due to miss the game as he deals with an injury to his hip, leaving Gareth Bale as the sole representative of Los Blancos' "BBC" forward line fit to take part.

While Ronaldo and Benzema are naturally huge losses, Real should have the players needed to cope in their absence.

Alvaro Morata returned to the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium this summer after two years with Juventus, while Marco Asensio has impressed during pre-season.

The likes of James Rodriguez, Isco and Lucas Vazquez will also be hoping to impress with Ronaldo and Benzema out of action.
