Burnley vs. Liverpool: Jurgen Klopp's Key Quotes from Pre-Match Press Conference

Rory MarsdenAug 18, 2016

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has questioned the widespread criticism of Reds left-back Alberto Moreno while confirming the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Divock Origi and Joel Matip are nearing full fitness.

The Anfield outfit opened their 2016-17 Premier League campaign on Sunday with an excellent 4-3 victory at Arsenal, but Moreno received plenty of criticism, as he was culpable for conceding a penalty and caught out of position for the Gunners' opening goal, per the Daily Express' Paul Joyce.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool's trip to Burnley on Saturday, Klopp was defensive when asked about the 24-year-old's form but did not rule out bringing in a new left-back before the transfer window closes, per the Liverpool Echo's James Pearce: "I'm sorry people aren't happy with Alberto Moreno. We will only take another one if it's the guy we want. [The] problem with transfers is no-one cares about players still here."

The German manager also said he was baffled by the conversation over Moreno, per Rohan Banerjee in the Mirror: "We are talking about Alberto Moreno because he didn’t defend so well against Arsenal? I don’t understand the conversation, maybe I should read more newspapers. The world is not satisfied with our left-back or what?"

Given the lack of cover Liverpool have at left-back, Moreno is likely to start again against newly promoted Burnley at Turf Moor.

But there could be changes elsewhere despite the victory against Arsenal, as Matip and Origi may be available while Sadio Mane is injured, per This Is Anfield:

Klopp also hinted that it should not be long until the return of Sturridge, James Milner and Lucas Leiva, per Pearce:

The fact that the Reds managed such an impressive attacking performance against Arsenal—they were 4-1 ahead at one point—without some of their key players will have given Klopp huge confidence.

Burnley are largely an unknown quantity, having only just returned to the Premier League, but they lost their season opener 1-0 to Swansea City on Saturday.

The Clarets having nothing like the attacking prowess of Arsenal, and the Reds defence should be more solid if Matip is included in the side.

Liverpool should be confident of claiming a second victory in two games at the start of the new campaign, which would put them in an excellent position as they begin to welcome more of their top players back.
