Arsenal Transfer News: Latest Jose Gimenez and Serge Gnabry Rumours

Tom SunderlandAug 17, 2016

Arsenal have reportedly switched their attention to Atletico Madrid centre-back Jose Gimenez as they look to find a solution to their defensive woes this summer. Meanwhile, Hertha Berlin have confirmed their interest in Serge Gnabry.

According to Adam Crafton of the Daily Mail on Wednesday, Arsenal are in talks with Atleti over a potential €45 million (£39 million) move for Gimenez as they continue their search for new back-line figures.

The Telegraph's Richard Amofa cited that report following the Gunners' 4-3 defeat to Liverpool on the opening day of the Premier League season, with Gimenez "believed to be open to a move to London."

Arsenal have also been linked with another defender from La Liga, Valencia's Shkodran Mustafi, and Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol recently said the Germany international could be on his way:

It's unlikely the north Londoners will spend heavily on two defenders, however, given that Laurent Koscielny is approaching match fitness and Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista are continuing their recovery from injuries.

Summer signing Rob Holding started at centre-back alongside Calum Chambers for the disappointing defeat to Liverpool. Football writer Liam Canning cited that as the biggest flaw in the team:

Elsewhere, Bundesliga outfit Hertha Berlin have confirmed they are looking to take Arsenal forward Gnabry on loan this summer following his exploits at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Hertha coach Pal Dardai told German newspaper Bild (h/t Metro's Sean Kearns) that the 21-year-old is what his team is looking for: "Serge exactly meets our search parameters. Let’s see what will happen in the next couple of days."

Gnabry has scored six goals for Germany's under-23 side in Rio de Janeiro, helping guide his nation to the tournament's semi-finals, where they'll face Nigeria on Wednesday evening.

Ishaan Tharoor of the Washington Post suggested Gnabry should be kept at the Emirates Stadium following his burst in form at the Games, though:

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger brought Gnabry to the Emirates from VfB Stuttgart's academy in 2011, but the Frenchman has so far been reluctant to utilise his talents, sending the player to West Bromwich Albion on loan last season.

Kearns reported Arsenal are "open" to farming their youngster out on loan, and a season in the Bundesliga may be just the opportunity he needs to prove himself at club level.
