Olympic 2016 Results: Tracking Wednesday's Medal Count for Each Country
Evan Jager was not about to let anyone take the 3,000-meter steeplechase away from him. He knew he was competing against other talented runners, but if he was going to be kept off the medal stand, he was at least going to employ a strategy that suited his running style.
That meant going to the front of the pack and pushing the pace as hard as he could. Jager executed that strategy, and it led to a silver-medal finish in the steeplechase event. The only runner to get the best of Jager was Conseslus Kipruto of Kenya, who set an Olympic record with a time of 8:03.28.
Jager said he was thrilled with his finish, as he became the first American male to medal in a steeplechase event since 1984.
"It was indescribable," Jager said after the race (h/t Paul Myerberg of USA Today). "That was totally joy.
"It was a lot of years of hard work, of daydreaming and dreaming about the moment. It all coming true and being able to truly enjoy the moment and those emotions and experiences. It happens in five seconds."
With a slew of events left on Wednesday's Olympic schedule, here is a look at the updated medal count for each country.
The United States men's basketball team will be back in action at 5:45 p.m. ET against a strong Argentina squad in a quarterfinal game.
Team USA has not been at its best in the last two games, as it has a margin of victory of just six points in the two games. The Americans have been victimized by their own inefficient play in the fourth quarter, and that has allowed their opponents to hang in for 40 minutes.
Ironically, the defense has let the team down along with some poor offensive execution in the final quarter. Assistant coach Tom Thibodeau was quite confident before the start of the tournament that all his players had bought into the defensive responsibility to win the gold medal.
"These are all top players who have shown commitment on the defensive end," he told me when the team practised in Chicago last month.
While Thibodeau has not called out any of his players in a public fashion, he can't be thrilled by what he has seen in recent games. If the defense does not pick up against Argentina, the United States could be vulnerable.
Now that the tournament is reaching its latter stages, look for a renewed effort on both sides of the ball from Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony.
American women could be in a position for multiple medals in the long jump and the 100-meter hurdles Wednesday night.

Brittany Reese is the defending women's champion in the long jump, and she will be going up against 2012 bronze-medal winner Janay DeLoach Soukup. Those two could end up in the top two spots in the event this time around.
The United States also appears to have an excellent chance at winning the gold and silver medals in the 100-meter hurdles. Brianna Rollins had the fastest time in the quarterfinals, and she has moved on to the finals. Kristi Castlin had the second-best qualifying time, and she appears to be at the top of her game and is a major challenge for Rollins.
