Beno Udrih to Heat: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Timothy RappAug 17, 2016

The Miami Heat have reportedly re-signed guard Beno Udrih to a one-year, $1.4 million guaranteed deal, according to Shams Charania of The Vertical and Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.

The Heat bought out Udrih's contract last season and waived him in March after acquiring him in a trade with the Memphis Grizzlies in November 2015. In 44 appearances between the two teams, he averaged 4.7 points and 2.6 assists per game.

Jackson offered more context on the signing:

According to a source at Octagon basketball, Udrih had a standing offer from the Heat for more than a month. He had other options but felt comfortable with the organization. Coach Erik Spoelstra made no assurances about playing time but has asked Udrih to provide veteran leadership.

His signing gives the Heat 19 players, with teams permitting to take 20 to training camp but keep no more than 15 during the regular season.

"

As Jackson noted, that means the Heat may not be able to keep players such as Briante Weber, Stefan Jankovic, Okaro White and Rodney McGruder.

Getting playing time won't be easy for Udrih, either. Goran Dragic will start at point guard, and Dion Waiters will likely start at the 2, while combo guards Josh Richardson and Tyler Johnson will also garner solid minutes. That means Udrih could find himself fifth on the team's guard rotation, and Wayne Ellington is also available at shooting guard.

Udrih will be the team's only other natural point guard after Dragic, however, which should weigh in his favor when coach Erik Spoelstra doles out playing time.
