Cao needed just a 73.15 on his final dive to secure the gold. He accomplished that and then some, pulling off a massive forward 4.5-somersault dive that earned him a 96.60 score and the gold medal.

For Cao, the victory is his second gold medal and third medal overall. He won the 10-meter synchronized platform gold in the 2012 London Games, and he also took home the bronze in the three-meter synchronized competition this year in Rio.

Laugher, meanwhile, nabbed his second medal of these Games. He also won gold in the three-meter synchronized competition. It was an excellent result for Laugher, who nearly didn't reach the final, as David Coverdale of the Sun noted:

And Hausding earned the second medal of his Olympic career to go along with his silver medal in the 10-meter platform at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The shock of the day came in the semifinals, however, when the defending gold medalist in this event, Russia's Ilya Zakharov, essentially belly flopped his fourth dive after his legs buckled on the board. That resulted in a "no dive" and ultimately an elimination from the event for the Russian.

NBC Olympics shared the fateful dive:

Zakharov nearly didn't advance from the preliminary round, as he hit the board on his first attempt, though he managed to sneak into the semifinals. From there, however, disaster struck again.

Zakharov wasn't the only favorite to be eliminated before the final. The reigning world champion, China's He Chao, was knocked out of the competition on Monday.
