Olympic Boxing 2016: Medal Winners, Scores and Tuesday's Results

Rob BlanchetteAug 16, 2016

A wild and noisy crowd greeted the men's light 60-kilogram boxing category final at the 2016 Rio Games on Tuesday as Robson Conceicao of Brazil defeated Sofiane Oumiha of France for the gold medal.

Conceicao was victorious on points by unanimous decision as he dominated the opening two rounds with speed, power and precision at the Riocentro, Pavilion 6.

Even with Oumiha's obvious talents, he couldn't land a clean shot on his opponent's chin, and despite a spirited finish, he was second best.

Cuba's Lazaro Jorge Alvarez and Otgondalai Dorjnyambuu of Mongolia claimed bronze medals in the class.

Conceicao became his country's first Olympic boxing champion, becoming a national hero on home soil.

Here is the latest medals table from the Olympics:

Conceicao was in sublime form in the opening round as the home crowd spurred on their fighter with huge noise and support.

The Brazilian caught Oumiha with a right hook and straight left as he danced around the centre. The Frenchman struggled to find his range as Conceicao controlled the ring with aggression and menace.

Conceicao was the clear winner of the first, and when the Frenchman looked to wrestle away the second, he put his foot down on the gas to impress judges with his work and accuracy.

Oumiha remained busy throughout, but despite a wonderful Olympics, he failed to hurt the Brazilian at the most vital moments.

Conceicao was cheered like a hero as he put his opponent through a barrage of punches, as the audience played their part in rapture and song—mirroring a football crowd.

The Frenchman changed tactics in the third round, but the eventual winner was confident in his defence, moving away from shots as they flew past his body.

Earlier in the day, multiple champion Julio Cesar La Cruz Peraza of Cuba prevailed in the semi-final of the men's light heavy 81-kilogram class as he beat Mathieu Albert Daniel Bauderlique of France by a unanimous points decision.

The Cuban now meets Adilbek Niyazymbetov of Kazakhstan, who defeated Great Britain's Joshua Buatsi in a 3-0 decision.

It was joyous to hear the support the gold medalist had before, during and after his finals bout, and it was not reflective of the sterile response from crowds at the athletics and other events.

Conceicao could develop into a world-class talent who Brazilians are proud of, and he is destined for more large stages as his career continues.
