Olympic 2016 Results: Tuesday's Live Updating Medal Count and Standings

Rob GoldbergAug 16, 2016

The United States continued to expand its lead in the overall medal count at the 2016 Summer Olympics despite missing out on a number of chances for gold Monday.

Exciting drama in gymnastics as well as track and field led to some memorable moments for a wide variety of countries, but the Americans seemed to be involved in many of the storylines. Here is a look at the latest medal count and a breakdown of the latest action.

Perhaps the most discussed moment of the day came when Allyson Felix was attempting to win her fifth career gold medal in the 400-meter run. She had some serious competition from fellow Americans in the final in Natasha Hastings and Phyllis Francis, but the real rival was Shaunae Miller.

Felix and Miller were neck and neck as they approached the final few meters, but a dive by Miller put her across the finish line first:

Considering Felix also missed out on qualifying for the 200 meter, which is her best event, by 0.01 seconds in the trials, this 0.07-second loss has to be extra frustrating. However, the torso is what counts for whatever way it crosses the line, which gave Miller the earned victory.

"This is the moment I have been waiting for. I just gave it my all," Miller said after the race, per CNN. "I am just so happy, so grateful, such emotions I just can't say. I've been going through so much this year. Everyone at home will all be celebrating right now."

No matter who you were rooting for, there is no denying the Bahamas star gave everything she had to win the first gold medal for her country in Rio.

As for Felix, the silver still put her in a class of her own, per SportsCenter:

The United States was also able to add a few more medals in track and field Monday evening. Clayton Murphy earned a bronze in the 800 meter while trailing now two-time gold medalist David Rudisha of Kenya. In the pole vault, Sam Kendricks took home a bronze, while Thiago Braz da Silva edged out Renaud Lavillenie in a competition in which both broke Olympic records.

It took until Tuesday morning for an American to finally snap the drought and win gold, as Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reported:

Across the rest of the sports, one of the biggest stars of the Olympic Games was in action in gymnastics but had to learn how to stand on another step of the podium. Simone Biles had already won golds in the team competition as well as individual all-around and vault.

In the balance beam, Biles had to settle for bronze. Teammate Laurie Hernandez took silver, and Sanne Wevers of the Netherlands won the gold.

The U.S. women's gymnastics team has one more chance to rack up medals in the floor competition, with both Biles and Aly Raisman top contenders for a gold medal.

More noteworthy competitions for Tuesday include the finals in the men's high jump and 110-meter hurdles as well as the women's 1,500-meter run. Medals will also be awarded in boxing, canoe, cycling, diving, gymnastics, sailing, swimming, synchronized swimming, table tennis, track and field, weightlifting and wrestling.

There are only a few days left of the Summer Olympics, so make sure you don't miss a moment.
