Steve SilvermanAug 15, 2016

Shaunae Miller of the Bahamas knew she was a worthy challenger to American track legend Allyson Felix. However, Miller wanted to be more than a strong opponent. She wanted a gold medal in the 400 meters.

Miller raced out to a sizable lead in the event and then held off the onrushing Felix by diving at the finish line in the last stride. The strategy worked, as the Bahamian runner won the photo finish and took home the gold medal. Felix earned the silver and was denied the gold medal that she wanted so much.

Biles had one misstep on the beam and that's why she was unable to finish on top in the event. Still, Biles accepted her position with grace and honor.

It was a brilliant day for American steeplechaser Emma Coburn. She became the first American to take home a medal of any kind in her event.

It was a brilliant day for Kenya's David Rudisha. He defended the gold medal he won at the 2012 London Olympics in the 800 meters by winning the event once again in Rio. Young American Clayton Murphy won the bronze medal with an excellent race.
