Monday Recap
Fans didn't have to wait long to see a major upset. In the first match in the men's singles draw, Julien Benneteau knocked Ferrer out in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
The service game proved to be a decisive factor in the result. Benneteau was good on his first serve, getting 63 percent in and winning 76 percent of the points. In comparison, the No. 10 seed succeeded on only 55 percent of his first-serve attempts and won 66 percent of the points.
The Spaniard also allowed 11 break-point opportunities, saving seven of them.
The two other seeded players, Cilic (No. 12) and Kyrgios (No. 14), had little trouble picking up victories Monday. Cilic dispatched Viktor Troicki in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, while Kyrgios did the same to Lucas Pouille, 6-2, 7-5.
It was a solid result for Cilic, who exited the 2016 Summer Olympics earlier than expected following a third-round loss to Gael Monfils.
Pouille pushed Kyrgios hard in the second set, but the enigmatic Australian needed a little over an hour before securing passage to the second round. Kyrgios can be his own worst enemy at times, but he brought his best stuff to Mason in his opening match.
On the women's side, Donna Vekic provided the biggest surprise with her straight-sets victory over Ivanovic. Including the Olympics, this is the third tournament in a row in which the 2008 French Open champion has left in the first round.
Tennis commentator David Law had conflicting emotions while watching Ivanovic lose:
For the 20-year-old Vekic, on the other hand, Monday's victory secured a trip to the second round of an event for the first time since the Qatar Total Open in February. She'll face a stern test in 10th-seeded Johanna Konta, though, so her time in Mason may not last much longer.
Coco Vandeweghe battled back from a 4-1 deficit in the third set to knock Errani out. Vandeweghe won the next five games, prevailing in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The 24-year-old capitalized on Errani's second serves. While the Italian attempted only 12, eight of the points ended in Vandeweghe's favor.

Garbine Muguruza will look to rebound from her Olympic defeat to gold medalist Monica Puig. The French Open champion will face off against Vandeweghe, who is confident she can advance to the third round, per the WTA:
Vandeweghe prevailed in their only two head-to-head matches, both of which came in 2014. A lot has changed since then. Muguruza, with a Grand Slam win under her belt, has risen toward the top of the tennis world.
The 22-year-old is still prone to the occasional upset, though. She lost in the second round at Wimbledon, and she has reached the quarterfinals in only four of her 13 events this year. Still, Muguruza will be the favorite to advance Tuesday.
Stan Wawrinka will take on American qualifier Jared Donaldson in his first match back since the Rogers Cup. The No. 2 missed out on the Olympics, saying Monday he wasn't physically up to competing in Rio de Janeiro, per Shannon Russell and Tom Groeschen of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
"My body wasn't ready," he said. "It was way too much pain to go to Rio, to take the risk. I had to make a decision. I'm much ready for the rest of the season."
Facing off with Donaldson will be a nice way for the Swiss to get back into the swing of things. The two have never played on the ATP World Tour, but Wawrinka should have little trouble advancing.
A strong showing in Mason would put Wawrinka in a strong position to follow up his semifinal run at the U.S. Open last year with another deep run.
