Olympic Shooting 2016: Saturday's Medal Winners, Scores and Results

Adam WellsAug 13, 2016

Shooting at the 2016 Olympics is starting to wind down, though Saturday featured two medal events on the men's side in the 25-meter rapid-fire pistol and skeet finals.

The skeet is the headlining event with 27-year-old American Vincent Hancock seeking his third straight Olympic gold medal.

In the 25-meter rapid-fire pistol contest, everyone was chasing defending Olympic gold medalist Leuris Pupo. The 39-year-old from Cuba had never before medaled in this event in three previous Olympics before 2012.

Here are the final results from Saturday's shooting events.

Men's Skeet Shooting

GoldGabriele Rossetti (Italy)
SilverMarcus Svensson (Sweden)
BronzeAbdullah Al-Rashidi (Independent Olympic Athletes)

Hancock left the door wide open for a new champion when he failed to make it out of qualifying. Gabriele Rossetti was happy to take advantage of the opening, winning gold by defeating Marcus Svensson in the finals.

Rossetti and Svensson were going back and forth in their quest for supremacy, but Svensson blinked first by missing his final target to give Rossetti a 16-15 victory.

The Italian star was on point against Svensson, so he certainly earned his crown with a perfect score in the final.

Abdullah Al-Rashidi took home the bronze medal with a 16-14 victory over Mikola Milchev. It was a huge step forward for the 52-year-old, who has competed at the Olympics every year since 1996 without getting on the medal podium.

Al-Rashidi last victory in the World Championships was 1998, and his last medal of any kind at the event was a bronze in 2011. He had to declare himself as an independent athlete as a result of Kuwait's ban from the Olympics, but there's no denying the power of this moment for the veteran skeet shooter.

Men's 25m Rapid-Fire Pistol

GoldChristian Reitz (Germany)34
Silver Jean Quiquampoix (France)30
BronzeLi Yuehong (China)27

Germany continues to dazzle in shooting events at these Olympics, earning a third gold medal in three days behind Christian Reitz's score of 34 points in the final.

John Marshall of the Associated Press provided the details:

Barbara Engleder won the women's 50-meter rifle three positions event on Thursday. Henri Junghaenel took home gold in the men's 50-meter rifle prone event.

Per Matthew Micali of NBCOlympics.com, Reitz's 34 points in the final tied an Olympic record. He breezed to victory without any real challenge, beating Jean Quiquampoix by four points.

Quiquampoix did need a surge to earn his silver medal. The French star got a perfect five out of five to stave off elimination, before following that up with another perfect score to advance to the medal round and at least keep some pressure on Reitz.

Quiquampoix and Li Yuehong went back and forth during the medal round, with Quiquampoix breaking a tie in the third round of a shoot off with five points. Pepo finished fifth, failing to medal for the fourth time in five Olympic appearances.

This was the moment Reitz has been building toward since he won bronze at the 2008 Olympics. He was part of Germany's gold medal-winning team at the 2013 European Championships, but this is his first major singles title.
