Monica Puig, the 22-year-old Puerto Rican wonder who blitzed through Rio, won the gold medal at the Olympics by beating world No. 2 Angelique Kerber, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, in a battle in Brazil.
Kerber wasn't herself most of the match, pulling on her back after the first set, but she came back and seized the second. At every turn, Kerber made Puig earn it, but in the third set, Puig got back to that surgically cruel backhand ensuring Kerber could not get up from the mat.
"I'm in complete disbelieve, complete shock, I don't know what to say," Puig said during the Bravo broadcast. "I told myself to be as aggressive as I could."
Puig became the the first Puerto Rican to win a gold medal ever, and the first woman also to win a medal of any color for her country.
"This is for them," Puig said. "They're going through some tough times. They needed this. I think this united a nation."
Yes, it did.
