Olympic Women's Tennis 2016: Time, Schedule for Monica Puig vs. Angelique Kerber

Stuart NewmanAug 13, 2016

The gold-medal match of the women’s singles tennis takes centre stage on Saturday in Rio de Janeiro, as Monica Puig and Angelique Kerber battle it out for the right to be crowned Olympic champion.

German athlete Kerber comes into the clash as the hot favourite, having eased her way to the final without dropping a set and playing some outstanding tennis along the way.

But the Olympics is known for throwing up underdog champions, and if Puig can find a way past the ever-impressive Kerber in Rio, she’ll be the first-ever gold medallist from Puerto Rico.

No matter what happens in the women’s singles final on Saturday, Puig has already proved herself a champion in so many ways.

The Puerto Rican came into the Olympics as a rank outsider, but the way she’s battled past some of the biggest names in the game has really caught the eye.

Puig’s semi-final showdown with Petra Kvitova summed up the world No. 34’s brilliance; despite losing the second set 6-1 and being on the wrong side of a change in momentum, she picked herself up to dump out the two-time Wimbledon champion.

And the 22-year-old seemed pretty pleased with herself afterwards, as she took to Twitter to celebrate the "dream" she’s made reality:

Puig will become just the ninth athlete from Puerto Rico to earn a medal at the Olympics, and she told Associated Press that her country deserves the jubilation, via FOX Sports:

"

This Olympics isn't about me. It's about Puerto Rico, and I know how bad they want this. The island is full of such bad news all the time so every time somebody from the island wins a medal, everything stops. I know how happy everybody gets.

"

Finding a way to a gold medal will be very difficult, though, as Kerber comes into Saturday’s match in exemplary form.

The German has had a quite remarkable season in 2016, winning the Australian Open title and surging up the world rankings to No. 2. Journalist Jose Morgado of Portuguese outlet Record commented on her sensational rise:

Winning Olympic gold would be the icing on the cake for Kerber, and she told AP that this year’s form is down to experience and confidence:

"I have a lot more confidence than last year because I won one of the biggest tournaments and also because I had a lot of experience from past years."

The 28-year-old also took to Twitter to express her excitement at going for a gold medal:

Kerber is one of the hardest-working players in the game, and she’ll look to catch fire straight away against Puig and take an early lead.

The German doesn’t have many weaknesses, but failing to finish off points is one of them. If Puig can capitalise on hesitation from Kerber, then she’ll have a serious chance of upsetting the odds.
