Del Potro vs. Murray: Live Score, Highlights from Olympics 2016

Brian PedersenAug 14, 2016

Great Britain's Andy Murray has made history in Olympic tennis, becoming the first man to win two gold medals and the first to repeat as men's singles champion. It was in no ways easy, though, needing just over four hours and four sets to beat Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro on Sunday night in Rio de Janeiro.

No. 1 seed Murray won 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5, clinching the championship by breaking unseeded del Potro for the ninth time overall and fourth time in the fourth set.

Del Potro was looking to cap off an unbelievable run that began with a three-set win over top-seeded Novak Djokovic in the first round and another three-set win over No. 3 Rafael Nadal in Saturday's semifinals. He'd played more than 11 hours to get to the final and looked extremely fatigued at times in the final but kept managing to fight his way back into the match. Too many mistakes in the fourth set, though, ultimately did him in and kept him from being the first Argentinian to win gold in tennis.

Instead del Potro won his second Olympic medal, after claiming bronze in 2012.

For Murray, not only did he defend the gold medal he won four years ago in London but it extended his winning streak to 18 matches. Since losing in the French Open final he's been unstoppable, winning his second Wimbledon championship in July.
