The U.S. women have been the most dominant team in soccer, and they were expected to win the gold medal in Rio. It's not going to happen.

Sweden beat the American women in a penalty shootout. The two teams were tied at 1-1 through extra time, and Sweden gained the victory based on its 4-3 edge in penalty kicks.

American goalie Hope Solo did not have the most sportsmanlike reaction:

It wasn't easy for the American women in volleyball, but they beat the Italy team in three sets. Team USA remains undefeated in the Olympic competition.

What a remarkable accomplishment for skeet shooter Kim Rhode. She won bronze in Rio, and it is the sixth consecutive Olympic competition in which she has come away with a medal.

In track and field, all three American men made it through their heats to the 400-meter semifinals. LaShawn Merritt, Gil Roberts and David Verburg still have gold-medal hopes.

The American men survived another scare in men's basketball, and this time it came against Serbia. The United States held on to win 94-91. Serbia had a chance to tie in the final seconds, but Nikola Jokic could not hit the game-tying shot for the upset-minded Serbs.

Michael Phelps does not get his gold medal in the 100-meter butterfly. He has to settle for the silver, along with two of his competitors.

Katie Ledecky rolls to victory and a world record in the 800-meter freestyle. Just another spectacular showing for the American superstar.

Ledecky matched the performance of another American swimming hero from the past with her win in the 800:

Maya DiRado had a remarkable finish to win gold in the 200-meter backstroke. After her come-from-behind victory, she received a huge hug from Phelps.

Americans Anthony Ervin and Nathan Adrian medalled in the 50-meter freestyle, with Ervin taking the gold and Adrian securing the bronze.
