Olympic 2016 Results: Live Updating Medal Count for Friday

Rob GoldbergAug 12, 2016

Day 6 at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games was a big day for the United States as the team added five gold medals to its total, including some from the top stars.

Simone Biles and Michael Phelps lived up to expectations by winning their signature events, while newcomer Simone Manuel was able to win her first medal.

On the other hand, a few countries that don't end up on the medal stand, like Fiji and Romania, had some big moments. This all took place in a busy day as we continue following the Summer Games.

It was both a day for superstars and for the ones who rarely hear their name called.

The big names we know came through as expected. Phelps won his 22nd gold medal of his career in the 200-meter individual medley. Simone Biles took one step closer to becoming the greatest female gymnast in history with her win in the individual all-around.

Beyond the wins, both were simply dominant in their victories. Phelps was expected to battle rival and world record holder Ryan Lochte for the victory, but ended up with about a two-second win as he pulled away from the rest of the field.

Lochte didn't medal.

The second-place American competitor did better in gymnastics as Aly Raisman took silver, but as ESPN noted, it was still a wide margin at the top:

Biles' routines weren't perfect, but her degree of difficulty on each apparatus made the win almost a foregone conclusion. Her and Phelps were already superstars coming into the week, and they didn't do anything to change that.

Meanwhile, it was just as big of a day for some of the competitors we might not have known earlier in the week. Swimmer Simone Manuel tied with Canada's Penny Oleksiak for the gold medal in the 100-meter freestyle, creating an incredible moment of surprise for both swimmers.

Manuel's emotional interview after the win was a moment that a veteran like Phelps just wouldn't be able to replicate:

The 20-year-old athlete added some more powerful thoughts after becoming the first African American woman to medal in an individual swimming event, per USA Today:

Greatness is fun to watch, but the most unexpected moments in sports also are the most memorable.

Another big moment came from a team on the other side of the world as Fiji won its first ever Olympic medal Thursday. Just for good measure, it was gold as the rugby team was truly dominant, earning a 43-7 victory over Great Britain in the championship game.

Former rugby player Rory Lawson explained how important the win was for the country:

With the sport finally returning to the Summer Games, Fiji could get ready for more wins in the future based on how it performed in Rio.

Other teams came through with emotional moments during the day, like Romania, which earned its first medal in 2016 with a gold in women's team epee. This is all part of the excitement and majesty that can only come from the Olympics.

Of course, there is still a lot more to come, including the events on Day 7. Medals will be awarded in archery, cycling, equestrian, fencing, judo, rowing, shooting, swimming, track and field, trampoline and weightlifting. Phelps is back in action as well as Katie Ledecky, both hoping to add to their own medal count.

The drama is still only getting started as we finish up the first week in Brazil.
