Manchester City Transfer News: Marc-Andre Ter Stegen Eyed Amid Joe Hart Rumours

Rory MarsdenAug 12, 2016

Joe Hart's Manchester City future could reportedly be in danger with new Sky Blues manager Pep Guardiola eyeing a move for Barcelona's Marc-Andre ter Stegen as he looks to bring in a sweeper-keeper.

Per John Cross in the Mirror, the Germany international is unsettled at Barca because he continues to play second fiddle to Claudio Bravo, and he could be tempted by a move to City if Guardiola comes in with an offer.

Cross added that Ter Stegen could be ideal in Guardiola's side—the Spaniard is looking to introduce tactics that would see City play the ball out from the back—and Hart could become "the most high-profile victim" of the new regime at the Etihad Stadium.

The German, 24, is very comfortable with the ball at his feet and has proved to be an accomplished all-round goalkeeper during two seasons at Barca.

Meanwhile, Hart is currently at a low ebb. Per Paul Jiggins in the Sun, he was labelled England's only world-class player by BBC pundit Alan Shearer before Euro 2016 but went on to make several high-profile errors in the France tournament.

While Guardiola may have rated him highly after a decent 2015-16 campaign, it would be surprising if he had not reassessed Hart following key mistakes for the Three Lions against Wales and Iceland.

And they were not statistical anomalies as Hart, 29, has been relatively error-prone in the Premier League over the last three seasons, per WhoScored.com:

Unlike Ter Stegen, he is not a natural ball-player and may struggle, at least early on, to adapt to the style of play Guardiola will demand.

Ter Stegen is a young, talented stopper who Guardiola could mould into his ideal goalkeeper, and he already has all the raw materials to be world class.

Per Cross, Bravo is likely to remain as Barca's No. 1 goalkeeper for La Liga in 2016-17, which would see Ter Stegen forced to continue playing only in the UEFA Champions League and Copa del Rey.

It was previously reported that Ter Stegen would force a move away from the Camp Nou should he not be promoted to the No. 1 position, per Sport.

However, the Spanish outlet also reported that Barca will not let him go unless his €80 million (£68.9 million) release clause is met.

City are unlikely to pay such a fee, but if Ter Stegen attempts to force his way out of Barca and the Sky Blues make a reasonable offer, Hart could find himself warming the bench next season.
