Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Daley Blind, Timothy Fosu-Mensah Rumours

Matt JonesAug 11, 2016

New Inter Milan manager Frank de Boer is reportedly keen to add Manchester United’s Daley Blind to his squad for the upcoming season.

That’s according to Mediaset Premium (h/t the Daily Telegraph) who suggested the Dutch coach is a fan of his compatriot, who would assist Inter in both midfield and defensive positions. De Boer is already said to have made it clear to the Nerazzurri directors that he wants to secure Blind, who is reportedly valued at £17 million by the Red Devils.

Blind was signed by former United boss Louis van Gaal and has done a solid job in a variety of different positions at Old Trafford. Despite this, according to the Times (h/t Mark Brus of Metro), new Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho is happy to move the 26-year-old for the right price.

It would be a big decision for the club, as Blind is so proficient in so many different areas. Having previously excelled at left-back and in midfield, the Dutchman was used at centre-back for almost the entirety of the 2015-16 term.

Liam Canning thinks the player wasn’t given the chance to show his best as a result, having typically lined up alongside Chris Smalling over the past year:

De Boer will know Blind's qualities well, and looking at Inter’s midfield options, they could certainly do with a defensively sharp and composed presence knitting things together. The player himself, in the peak years of his career, will also surely be keen to play a key part at a big club.

With Mourinho strengthening United’s midfield and defensive options with physical, big-money captures, you suspect chances will be at a premium for the player. The chance for a fresh start at a massive club like Inter would be a superb opportunity for Blind should it materialise.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah to Sign New Deal

According to Joe Bernstein of the MailOnline, Manchester United youngster Timothy Fosu-Mensah is poised to sign a new long-term contract with the club.

The 18-year-old Dutchman came into the team towards the end of the previous season and excelled, providing plenty of glimpses of raw potential. Bernstein noted United will announce Fosu-Mensah’s new deal "in the coming days."

As these numbers from WhoScored.com illustrate, when he was in the team last term, the youngster was a bundle of defensive energy:

Indeed, a new contract would illustrate Mourinho’s commitment to giving rising stars a chance at United. The Portuguese, for all his qualities as a coach, has often been accused of neglecting youth development in favour of signing established stars; Fosu-Mensah is one of the best young prospects at Old Trafford.

Having joined the Red Devils from Ajax in 2014, the Dutchman’s reputation has grown and grown, even featuring for United in their FA Cup semi-final win over Everton earlier this year.

Bleacher Report’s Sam Pilger believes that Fosu-Mensah could well force his way into United’s starting XI for the upcoming campaign and can feature in different positions:

All the attributes are there do so. The teenager is calm on the ball, physically imposing and committed in his defensive duties. The signs were last season that he’s ready to make an impression at the highest level.

And should a utility player like Blind depart, perhaps Fosu-Mensah can become United’s man for all occasions due to his own flexibility as a footballer. Of all the rising stars at Old Trafford, with a new contract set to be signed, the Dutchman’s development will be the most fascinating to track under Mourinho.
