Arsenal confirmed the signing of Valencia centre-back Shkodran Mustafi on Tuesday, finally signing the star defender the fans so desired.

The club confirmed the news via their official website. Manager Arsene Wenger was delighted with his capture and said: "He is at the right age. He has good experience. He is a very focused player who can play with the ball as well. We have taken a great player but have prepared well for the future."

Mustafi, 24, has established himself as one of Europe's best young centre-backs during his two seasons at Valencia, and he has already earned a dozen caps for the Germany national side.

Per WhoScored.com, he is a strong tackler and excellent at interrupting opposition attacks, while his aerial presence will make him a major asset in the back line:

Formerly a Sampdoria player, Mustafi has proved an effective defender in both Serie A and LaLiga, so he should be able to slot in well in the Premier League.

For football writer Liam Canning, he is an excellent signing for Arsenal:

Proven centre-backs are few and far between on the transfer market at the moment, but Mustafi is one of the best talents around and is still far from his peak.

The Gunners sorely needed defensive reinforcements this summer even before injuries to Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista.

In Mustafi, they've acquired a significant upgrade and a player who can make a long-term partner for Laurent Koscielny in the centre of defence.

Given more opportunities and more experience, he is likely to improve dramatically, and he could be a major asset for Arsenal over the best part of the next decade.
