Real Madrid Transfer News: Marco Asensio Future Confirmed by Zinedine Zidane

Christopher SimpsonAug 10, 2016

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has said Marco Asensio will remain with Los Blancos this season following his goalscoring exploits against Sevilla on Tuesday.

According to Football Espana, Zidane said:

"

Asensio’s going to stay with us. That’s my plan [for him]. When he plays, he plays well, and I’m happy with the work he’s done today. We have a dependable squad. If we can’t sign anyone then we won’t, but we have a very broad and good squad, with very experienced players and young players. The most important thing is the group.

The attacking midfielder started ahead of James Rodriguez and netted a stunning long-range strike after 21 minutes as Real beat Sevilla 3-2 in the UEFA Super Cup.

The UEFA Champions League captured one angle of the Spaniard's swerving strike:

Asensio spent last season on loan with Espanyol, racking up four goals and 13 assists to help them remain in La Liga another year.

Here are some of his highlights:

The versatile 20-year-old can play centrally or on the wing. According to Goal's Ben Hayward, Barcelona missed out on him in favour of signing Douglas, allowing Real to steal and snap up the prospect.

Per Hayward, his agent Horacio Gaggioli said he is highly likely to stay put this summer: "What I know is that he has a 99 per cent chance to stay at Madrid. There's a 1 per cent chance he could leave."

His incredible strike against Sevilla drew plaudits from Spanish football expert Sergi Dominguez and writer Andrew Gaffney:

Following Jese Rodriguez's move to Paris Saint-Germain, there's space for a squad player who can provide cover out wide or in attacking midfield at the Santiago Bernabeu this season.

His form last year and impressive debut on Tuesday indicates Asensio is more than ready to fulfil that role in the squad.

With both Zidane and his agent confident he'll stay put, Asensio is set for another big campaign and will likely prove to be very useful to Los Blancos.
