Marcos Maidana Retires: Latest Comments and Reaction
Marcos Maidana, who was last seen in the ring when he lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr. by unanimous decision in September 2014, announced his retirement from boxing on Tuesday.
The 33-year-old made the decision official with a post on Facebook:
Maidana steps away from boxing with a stellar 35-5-0 record that includes 31 knockouts. He also captured junior welterweight and welterweight world titles over the course of his illustrious career, as BoxingScene.com noted.
However, Maidana's results took a turn for the worse once he defeated Adrien Broner by unanimous decision in December 2013. After putting the finishing touches on his fourth straight win between September 2012 and December 2013, Maidana incurred two losses against Mayweather Jr. that effectively signaled the end of his career.
The first came in May 2014, when Mayweather was forced to scrap and claw for a majority-decision victory over the pesky Argentinian fighter.
"He put pressure on me and that's when I decided to fight differently," Mayweather said following the fight, per ESPN.com's Dan Rafael. "I stood there and fought him. He's a good fighter, I take nothing away from him."
The second loss came just four months later, when the two met at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas once again for what figured to be a thrilling sequel.
Unfortunately for Maidana, he wasn't able to channel his aggression in ways that allowed him to remain competitive during the first installment of the two-part series.
Specifically, he failed to land punches against the elusive Mayweather. According to CompuBox (via ESPN Stats & Info), Maidana landed 93 fewer punches (221-128) in the second fight than in the first meeting with the pound-for-pound king.
Nevertheless, Maidana pieced together a stellar run at the start of his career that included 25 straight victories between June 2004 and November 2008.
And now that he's called it quits, the former champion can set his sights on helping young boxers achieve their dreams in the years ahead.
