Tina Trstenjak of Slovenia and Russia's Khasan Khalmurzaev took home the gold medals in judo during Tuesday's 2016 Summer Olympics action, winning the women's -63kg and men's -81kg divisions, respectively.

Trstenjak beat France's Clarisse Agbegnenou in the final, winning Slovenia its first gold medal of 2016, while Khalmurzaev took advantage of Takanori Nagase's shock loss in the quarter-finals to beat Travis Stevens of the United States and grab an unexpected Olympic title.

Recap

Fans didn't have to wait long for major upsets on Tuesday, as title favourite and 2015 world champion Takanori fell in the quarter-finals to the UAE's Sergiu Toma.

Takanori had qualified for the quarter-finals by beating Paul Kibikai of Gabon by yuko, but the roles reversed in his contest with Toma. Even the International Judo Federation's official Twitter account was stunned:

The Japanese star was unbeaten in 2016 entering the Olympics, and his shock loss opened up the men's -81kg competition completely. Just as shocking was the fact home favourite Victor Penalber, who grabbed bronze at the world championships last year, had been eliminated in the previous round by Toma as well.

Khalmurzaev and Georgia's Avtandil Tchrikishvili became the favourites for the gold with Takanori forced into repechage, with the former meeting Toma in the semi-finals and the latter taking on Stevens.

Stevens was the first man to book his spot in the final, making his opponent tap, before Khalmurzaev ended Toma's Cinderella run with a golden score. Judo world champion Kayla Harrison was excited for her compatriot:

Toma was rewarded for his great work with the bronze medal, as he beat Italy's Matteo Marconcini by sumi-gaeshi, and Takanori also medalled with a win over Tchrikishvili by yuko.

Stevens had the chance to become the first American man to win the gold medal, but like the men who came before him, he couldn't finish the job, as Khalmurzaev scored ippon to win a thriller.

In the women's -63 kg competition, favourites Agbegnenou and Miku Tashiro were on a collision course all day, setting up a semi-final date, but it was a local athlete who stole the show.

Mariana Silva shocked former world champion Yarden Gerbi of Israel by yuko after two minutes of golden score to earn a spot in the semi-finals, where she took on Trstenjak.

Haviv Rettig Gur of the Times of Israel thought Gerbi's loss was very bad news for Israel's medal chances:

Gerbi beat Tashiro, who had lost her semi-final, in the first bronze-medal match, winning by waza-ari and yuko, and Anicka van Emden beat Silva by yuko to take the second bronze.

In the final, Trstenjak retained the title for Slovenia, beating favourite Agbegnenou in dominant fashion.
