Olympic 2016 Medal Count: Latest Nation Rankings and Standings for Monday

China moved to the top of the gold-medal leaderboard at Rio de Janeiro on Monday, as a late victory in the men's diving competition moved them above the United States to claim a four gold-medal haul in the 2016 Summer Olympics.

The U.S. remain overall leader with 13 medals to their name.

Eight different sports were offering the chance to secure medals on the third official day of action in Brazil, including swimming, diving, fencing, gymnastics, judo, rugby, shooting and weightlifting.

Rugby and gymnastics handed out their first medals, while the other six sports continued over from their previous weekend ceremonies.

Day 3 Recap

USA's dominance in the pool saw them enter Day 3 at the top of the standing. Despite enhancing their medal total to 13 overall, they slipped to second in the gold-medal rankings having claimed one fewer than their Far East rivals. 

China have two silver medals and four bronze to make 10 medals overall, while Italy have picked up three gold medals and four silvers so far.

Japan have three gold and seven silver to lift themselves into fourth on the overall leaderboard, with Australia trailing with three golds and three bronze medals in total.

On another productive day in South America for China, the pairing of Aisen Chen and Yue Lin outclassed the field in the men's synchronised 10-metre platform competition with a final score of 496.98, almost 40 points clear of closest challengers USA.

The United States duo of David Boudia and Steele Johnson were forced to settle for the silver medal in the short-dive format, with Great Britain's Tom Daley and Daniel Goodfellow beating Germany to third place on the rostrum.

Eurosport UK offered photographs of the Team GB pair embracing after achieving a bronze in the first Olympics together:

Meanwhile, Josip Glasnovic secured Croatia's first gold medal of the Games as he toppled Italy's Giovanni Pellielo in a sudden-death shootout in the men's trap shooting.

With 13 hits each in regulation, the match was forced into an additional period whereby the first mistake would be punished. Glasnovic finished as victor in the shoot-off in an enthralling finale, as Great Britain's Ed Ling made up the final podium position with a 13-9 win over the Czech Republic's David Kostelecky.

Elsewhere, and in the 58-kilogram class of women's weightlifting, it was a sensational day in Rio for Thailand as they secured gold and silver. Sukanya Srisurat lifted an Olympic record 110 kilograms in the snatch section of the event, an eight-kilogram gap to her nearest challenger, to finish with an overall total of 240.

Her compatriot Pimsiri Sirikaew also lifted 130 kilograms in the clean and jerk to finish on 232 as Taiwan's Hsing-chun Kuo took the final medal-serving position in an eventful and exciting finale.
