Chip Kelly Announces Rogers' Injury

Friday, Aug. 5

Per Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, 49ers head coach Chip Kelly said Friday that Rogers tore his ACL during a non-contact drill on special teams.

Per Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle, Kelly was also pleased with the progress Rogers made before his injury occurred: “He was doing a great job for us. Really feel for him. That transition from the CFL—had a great spring for us and was really pushing.”

Rogers signed with the 49ers in January after playing the last two seasons with the CFL's Calgary Stampeders. He had a star-making performance in 2015, leading the league with 1,448 yards and 10 touchdown receptions and finishing fourth with 87 receptions.

A graduate from NCAA Division III's California Lutheran University, Rogers is an impressive physical specimen at 6'3" and 211 pounds, per Ourlads.com. He had the size and speed to help open up a 49ers offense that finished 29th in passing yards last season.

Instead, Rogers will have to wait one more year to make his NFL dreams come true. The 49ers are still trying to build an offensive identity heading into Kelly's first season as head coach. Torrey Smith is a speedy receiver on the outside, but this team doesn't have the depth to lose a playmaker before its first game begins.
