Andre Ward easily defeated Alexander Brand by unanimous decision in an absolutely dreadful tune-up fight Saturday night at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.
All three judges scored the contest 120-108 for the undefeated Ward, who gained the meaningless WBO International Light Heavyweight Championship.
Ward (30-0, 15 KO) was levels above his unheralded opponent, but he took few risks and easily won every second of every round in a fight that proved absolutely nothing. Brand spent the entire fight trying to survive and never mounted any significant offense of his own.
The bout was the last hurdle before Ward and light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev could finalize a deal to meet with the unified 175-pound championship November 19 on HBO pay-per-view.
