Liverpool Transfer News: Jurgen Klopp Considers Defensive Buy, Jonas Hector Talk

Matt JonesAug 2, 2016

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is reportedly ready to delve back into the transfer market to address problems with the team’s defence, with FC Cologne’s Jonas Hector linked.

As reported by Dominic King of MailOnline, the German coach had previously suggested that, after making seven summer signings, the club’s business was concluded. But it’s claimed that with the club short in defensive positions, particularly on the left flank, the Reds could yet make another acquisition at the back.

“Is the activity all over? I have no idea,” said the manager when asked about potential incomings, per King. “I don’t think so. We will see what happens.”

King provided an update on Liverpool’s left-back predicament: “Klopp is prepared to use James Milner as emergency left-back cover but after seeing Alberto Moreno—his first choice for that position—hobble off with a dead leg against Roma in St. Louis, the German confirmed he will go into the market if the right target becomes available.”

It’s stated in the piece that Hector, valued at £20 million, remains on Liverpool’s radar, with the club having missed out on Leicester City starlet Ben Chilwell.

The Germany international impressed at the summer’s UEFA European Championship and has been a steady presence in numerous positions in the Bundesliga. Here’s why he’s a player who would excite Reds supporters:

While Hector played primarily in midfield for Cologne in 2015-16, if Liverpool were to get him he’d likely be pushed back into a left-back spot, a role in which he is extremely comfortable.

Last term it was an area of the field that gave plenty tied to the Reds nightmares. Moreno, for all his enthusiasm and intelligence in the final third, was often a liability in defence; these issues were highlighted in the UEFA Europa League final, as the 24-year-old endured a torrid evening as Liverpool lost to Sevilla.

If Hector did come in, he’d be a more solid option. These numbers from WhoScored.com show he’s a defensively sound presence in the wide positions:

One of the benefits of having a player like Milner at the club is his versatility, and there were occasions last term, especially in the Capital One Cup final against Manchester City, when he excelled in the left-back spot. Nevertheless, he’s not a long-term option should Moreno suffer with injury or suspension.

Liverpool arguably need an upgrade on their starting left-back anyway for the upcoming season. Moreno may still be young and learning about the Premier League, although there are big questions about whether he’ll ever be defensively sound enough to thrive in the division.

As these numbers from Squawka Football show, the Reds need to shore things up at the back:

Klopp has made some steady signings this summer and will be content with the shape of his squad overall. Joel Matip will provide some excellent cover in the centre-back position, while Marko Grujic looks capable of stiffening up the centre of midfield. But defensively, the left-back spot is a major chink in the armour.

Hector has the credentials to plug that gap and would be a useful player to have around the squad. Whether it’s the German or not, Klopp would be wise to bolster his options in the side.
