Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel told TMZ Sports in June he vowed to get sober starting July 1, but the former Heisman Trophy winner was reportedly spotted drinking at a Los Angeles-area bar last Saturday.
"He was with a group of five and stayed for 25 minutes," a witness told Page Six's Mara Siegler. "He had a ginger shot—a specialty drink with whiskey. And downed a rum and Coke."
Manziel has reportedly battled substance abuse issues for some time. In April, he was accused of breaking the terms of his lease on a Los Angeles mansion when he threw a party that resulted in damage throughout the home.
According to Page Six's Emily Smith, Manziel and his friends were accused of throwing "two all-night ragers."
"Mr. Manziel threw large parties on both nights, causing extensive damage," Niki Ghazian, the lawyer for real estate broker Nicholas Goodwin, who rented the property to Manziel, said, per Smith. "Evidence suggests [Manziel] and his guests were consuming drugs and alcohol...and that they caused a disturbance to the neighborhood."
On June 24, Manziel's father, Paul Manziel, told ESPN's Josina Anderson his son is in need of help for his drug problem.
"He's a druggie. It's not a secret that he's a druggie," Paul Manziel said, according to ESPN.com. "I don't know what to say other than my son is a druggie and he needs help. He just hasn't [sought] it yet. Hopefully he doesn't die before he comes to his senses."
Prior to telling TMZ he was going to get clean, Manziel found himself in trouble again when a woman staying at a Cabo home rented by the former Texas A&M Aggie appeared to post a picture on Snapchat of several bags of drugs.
In April, the 23-year-old was indicted on a Class A misdemeanor domestic violence charge stemming from his alleged assault of ex-girlfriend Colleen Crowley. If convicted, Manziel faces up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $4,000, per the Dallas Morning News' Jennifer Emily.
