Liverpool Transfer News: Jetro Willems Talks, Latest Piotr Zielinski Rumours

Gianni VerschuerenAug 1, 2016

PSV full-back Jetro Willems has refused to rule out a transfer move amid plenty of speculation Liverpool are looking at the youngster, while Napoli have moved ahead of the Reds in the race to land Piotr Zielinski of Udinese.

As reported by Richard Amofa and Harry Yorke of the Daily Telegraph, Willems has already dropped several hints he's interested in Liverpool, including telling summer signing Georginio Wijnaldum they would "see each other soon."

The Netherlands international has now told Fox Sports (h/t the Telegraph) he's not sure whether he'll stay with his current club for the 2016-17 campaign:

"

There are a number of clubs that have been in touch.

We are looking at my options. I don't know whether I will be gone by the time the Eredivisie season has started, but things will be alright, I am not overly worried about that.

I am focused on PSV for now. We won another trophy today, silverware just keeps coming.

"

Joe Rimmer of the Liverpool Echo previously reported manager Jurgen Klopp wanted to add Willems as a depth option and a possible future starter at the left-back position, the one position where the Reds have some question marks entering the season. He even suggested a £13 million offer has already been made.

The 22-year-old has been a regular starter for PSV since 2011 and has long been hailed as one of the Netherlands' top prospects. Injuries have slowed down his development, but he's been consistently great in the last two seasons and appears to finally be making good on his lofty potential.

As reported by Dipesh Agarwal of Sport Witness, PSV manager Phillip Cocu has already dropped hints he could be on his way out of the club, and combined with Willems' comments and his persistent hints, there's every reason to believe a deal could be made.

Here's a look at some of his highlights:

The reported bid of £13 million likely won't be too far off PSV's valuation for the player, and for such a minor fee, he's well worth the risk. Willems has tremendous potential, particularly in the attacking third, and while his injury history is cause for concern, you won't find too many talented young players with his upside for such a minor fee.

Zielinski could be such an option, as Udinese reportedly want £17 million for the Poland international. According to Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t the Telegraph), Napoli have now launched a £15.2 million offer, leaping ahead of the Reds in the queue.

Liverpool have been linked with the 22-year-old since the start of the summer, and a host of other clubs have thrown their hat into the ring as well. Jean-Luca Mascaro of GianlucaDiMarzio.com (translated by David Amoyal) previously reported AC Milan were close to a deal, and Napoli have also been a constant.

Bleacher Report's Jack Lusby can't believe none of those clubs have officially added him so far:

Zielinski enjoyed a fine 2015-16 campaign on loan at Empoli, and Udinese have a tendency to move their top foreign stars early, making sure they get a nice return. A transfer seems likely, but a move to Anfield became an afterthought as soon as Wijnaldum joined.

The Pole still needs a lot of seasoning, and he probably would have found minutes hard to come by in Liverpool if he had made the switch. Things won't be any easier in Naples, but at least he won't have to worry about switching leagues and will be able to battle for a starting position at a UEFA Champions League club.
