BLAKE NAMED CAPTAIN OF SHARKS

The day before opening their regular season campaign against the Colorado Avalanche the San Jose Sharks officially announced that veteran defenceman Rob Blake will be their new captain. This 19- year veteran who scored 45 points last season and has a Stanley Cup on his resume (2001 with the Avalanche) takes over from forward Patrick Marleau who had the ‘C’ removed this past summer from coach Todd McLellan. After winning the President Trophy last year San Jose drastically underachieved in the post season as they were eliminated in the first round. Marleau who has spent his entire 11- year career with the Sharks scored three playoff points and received a lot of criticism for the Sharks losing.

KOSTITSYN REQUESTS A TRADE

A day after being sent down to the Hamilton Bulldogs (American Hockey League) forward Sergei Kostitsyn asked Montreal Canadiens GM Bob Gainey to trade him. Rumors have begun speculating that this 22 year-old forward who refused the assignment to Hamilton is considering playing in the KHL. Last year Kostitsyn produced 23 points and was a disappointing –3.

MYERS MAKES THE SABRES OPENING NIGHT ROSTER

After a solid training camp hulking 23 year-old blue liner Tyler Myers was informed on Wednesday that he earned a spot on the Buffalo Sabres roster. Selected 12th overall in the 2008 draft this six foot eight prized prospect is coming off a stellar playoff run for the Kelowna Rockets (WHL) that saw him win Playoff MVP after scoring 20 points and a +13 last spring.
