Dahntay Jones Waived by Cavaliers: Details, Comments and Reaction

Joe PantornoJul 30, 2016

The Cleveland Cavaliers released veteran forward Dahntay Jones on Saturday, ESPN's Marc Stein reported.ย

The 35-year-old spent just one year with the Cavaliersโ€”the eighth team of his careerโ€”appearing in one regular-season game and 15 postseason contests. ย

Cleveland had to make a decision on what to do with Jones before Monday. According toย Sam Amicoย of AmicoHoops.net, had the Cavaliers kept the veteran on the roster on August 1, his $1.5 million salary would have been guaranteed for the 2016-17 season.

Stein noted Jones could return to Cleveland after clearing waivers.ย

Jones has been a reserve for most of his career, starting more than 26 games just once in a single season.

During his 12 years in the league, he has averaged 5.4 points in 15.7 minutes per game.

After 33 games with the Los Angeles Clippers in 2014-15, Jones spent most of the 2015-16 season with theย Grand Rapids Drive of the NBA Development League.

But when the Cavaliers ran into injury troubles with guards Mo Williams and Iman Shumpert down the stretch, theyย signedย Jones for depth on April 13, the day of Cleveland's regular-season finale against the Detroit Pistons.

He played 42 minutes that night, recording 13 points and five rebounds.ย

During the Cavaliers' run to their first world championship, Jones tallied only 17 points in his 15 postseason games, as both Shumpert and Williams were available. He was also behind Kyrie Irving and Matthew Dellavedova, which made playing time scarce.ย

He still had some big moments, such as hitting the Cavaliers' NBA record-setting 24th three-pointer during Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Atlanta Hawks:

Jones also had some low points, including aย one-game suspensionย he received by hitting then-Toronto Raptors center Bismack Biyombo below the belt during Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals.

Regardless, his ability to help defend the perimeter was a nice option to have coming off the bench in the Finals against the Golden State Warriors'ย Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.ย

While his time in Cleveland was limited, it was fruitful, resulting in a championship ring for his 16-game stint. Now he'll seek a new contract for 2016-17, whether that's in Cleveland or elsewhere.ย
